After reading this article (below), it makes me want to move to the UK. Why couldn't we have this in the US many years ago? In the article it says an UK company is offering a period leave for women. I had very bad periods before getting on birth control so this would have been a great thing. Here is the article:
A small company in the United Kingdom is offering female employees paid "period leave," in what might be the first company policy of its kind. The compa...

It's only ONE company though. I"m not saying moving to the UK isn't a great idea, but well it is only ONE company so far. I have strange periods but they are no longer terribly bad. Occasional I will have a bad one but for the most part it's just annoying.

@ScribbledAdNauseum, You are right, it is only one company and a very small one with that. I am sure they got a lot of free publicity with this line.

Wouldn't that make things so counter-productive though? Am a guy so i don't know how bad this can get, but am sure if this were to be a policy in every company in a country, the effects would be massive.

Good point but I Imagine that you have to prove medically that your periods can be horrendous.

some of us can take the day off if we're experiencing problem like this but we need to secure a medical certificate first.

I am on the mini pill because I suffered from heavy periods and bad cramps. The mini pill has stopped them completely, along with the side effects. While I know this doesn't work for everyone, this works for me.

I have never heard of such a thing as period leave. It would be nice if they did offer such a thing around here.

That would be a good news for women. I am sure, many women across the country wanted to have period leave. Is it being implemented?

I'm female, I live in the UK and I think this company is doing something absolutely ridiculous. We already have statutory sick pay for people who are really too ill to work.

@euphie I've never had problems of this type and I've never had kids either but I'm pretty sick of paying the price of other people's problems.

@boiboing Some people have problems but for each genuine person, there are 3 more that seem to know how to play the system.

I kind of agree with you - and things like that will just make companies less likely to employ women. Some companies already are reluctant to employ women due to maternity rights, if this becomes more widespread, this could damage things further.

Then men have to be entitled to an equal number of paid days off.

Reading the comments below, I feel sorry for you girls because you experience issues during your period. It's something I haven't experienced yet. I think I'm not normal.
