My life in Shanghai and dumplings!!!

I lived in Shanghai for 2.5 years a while back. One of the things I loved about Shanghai was this amazing steamed dumplings. The Shanghainese would have steamed or fried dumplings for breakfast. I used to be able to get 6 of these in my local market for 2RMB (0.31 USD according to the exchange rate of today). Ever since I've left Shanghai, I've had to make my own! After several failed attempts, I've finally nailed it I think. This is what I'll have for dinner today! 100% Home made. Have you had dumplings before? Can you make them? What do you normally have for breakfast?

It's what we call "momo" here, but also dumplings. They taste great and I eat them when I'm out. My mom makes them sometimes but I can't.....will try in future though! Love them. I now eat from a roadside shack that sells 4 momos at Rs. 10/- with chicken soup.

I learned how to make them in Beijing, would you believe? Lol! A little old lady taught me in her kitchen. I also ate them in Shanghai and they were delicious. Years before I had them in Hong Kong. As far as making them here, we order them. I love them cooked any way! I'm impressed with your culinary skills!

oh wow that is impressive! Beijing dumplings taste so different! You're lucky you live somewhere where you can just get them off the menu. Whilst I can get these in take out here, they just don't taste as good, so I learned it off YouTube. :D The love of good food is my only motivation for cooking xD

@DianneN Mmmm meatballs are good. :D When I first moved out to live on my own, 17 - 21, I spent that entire time living on take outs. Then I became hugely broke and got fed up of take outs. So I ended up making the 1 thing or 2 thing every now and then. That's how my cooking habit got started

@Drosophila I'm sure homemade are much better. Nothing motivates me to cook, although I made meatballs for the freezer today.

I've had them many times and I love them! I haven't mastered cooking them yet, however. Breakfast, for me, can be as simple as toast and peanut butter or as grand as banana pancakes and coffee. It all depends on what's in the kitchen and how much time I have. :)

Thanks thanks! Yep, I tried and failed alot of times, but I think I got it now. The difficulty is really getting the skin right. I either make it too hard or soft.

Steamed dumpling is one of my favorite Chinese food. I love their dipping sauce. It's spicy with a sour taste. I don't know how to make one. Every time I visit Chinatown, I make sure I order some steamed dumplings. Aside from steamed dumplings, I also like their noodles, buns, egg rolls, etc.

Oh they are great! I also love the dipping sauce, I was able to make my own chilli oil and adding it to some vinegar I find in the chinese shop. Overall not a bad combination.

Is it the same what here in India, Pune, it is known as Momos? If it is, I did have it once, but were very bland, no taste at all. Would not have it a second time.

@jabo yep it's really whatever you want to put into them. A bit like the raviolis I guess. For these, I put pork, prawns, and chopped chinese greens. it turned out great.

I only make the 'European' dumplings I guess that sit on top of a plate of stew or whatever. It's good you've managed the art of making these type. I bet they're delicious.

I would love to know what is in those dumplings! The dumplings I make are made with Bisquick, dropped into bubbling stew or soup and are delicious but are difficult to get just right. These look amazing but it looks like they are wrapped around something...almost like perogies.

They are indeed stuffed. It's the Chinese version of raviolis if you like. These are wrapped in a mixture of pork mince and prawns with Chinese greens (chopped). They are eaten dipped in a vinegar and chilli oil dipping sauce

They are fairly different looking. They are like raviolis if you like. So you can put anything into them. These turned out ok. I'll try to put some different filling into them next time. Maybe a prawn and crab mixing.

It looks more complicated than it is really. The YouTube tutorial does wonders. If you don't have time cook breakfast, maybe you can get some shake instead. That saves time and is yummy.

Ah yep dim sum dumplings with prawns are yum.. I used to have it in China Town in London when I lived there. Now I have to go to dublin for it, which is a shame. Yep poached egg or boiled eggs become my regular fare too these days.
