The Grocery Revelation

I started making the grocery list so we can get groceries on Friday. I was putting down all the usual things. Chicken, hamburger, etc. and things that have to be cooked on the stove. Then I had a sudden revelation. It's Spring! Warm, even hot. We don't want added heat in the house. I work hard to get the kids to close the door and not leave it open in the heat of the day. Between about 3p. and about 5p. is the hottest part of the day. So, I threw that list away and made another with sandwich ingredients, salad, cottage cheese and lighter things. Whoa! Glad I realized. We'll soon be having a fruit salad in a few days. The lady down the way was moving and gave us a smoothie maker. With weather already in the 90's we need to keep it as cool as possible. It's going to be a sizzler this summer I tell you.

Heat is something that I hate, so I try and just put A/C on or the fan to help cool down.

I have the fan on now. I will use the fan on those hot days during the heat of the day between 3p. and 5p.

I put A/C on at night just before I go to bed, that ensures a cold start. I usually wake up a couple of hours later and then I turn it off. So far we have managed with just the breeze during the day.

You will be asking the children to close the door to keep the heat out now!

I wish grandson would. He says it is his room and he can do what he wants so yesterday during the heat of the day he had his blinds up. He can be such a putz.

Idaho gets really hot in the summers? 90 degrees sounds unbearable to me.

Yes, it does. We have had fires here every year for as long as I can remember. Real bad one last year.

Yes, it will be warmer than usual again. I grill a lot during the summer, easy stuff like chicken and burgers.

Sounds like the way to do it. Why be in the hot kitchen if you don't have to be?

As I read this I have a fire going and a chill is starting to override the heat. Bedtime!

That's a good idea I did not realize that, summer is almost at end here in my place and little bit of shower rain is expected in the afternoon. But sometimes from noon time up to 3pm the heat of the sun is still so high and thats a good idea to reduce heat inside the house.

I have had to find some economical tricks to staying cool.

When you are in the mood for chicken you can just pick up an already made rotisserrie chicken from the deli. Go towards the end of the night, around 6:30-7 o'clock as there are usually stickers on them for a few bucks off because it's either get them sold or throw them out...

I keep my house cool and when I cook you can't tell the different, it doesn't get hot. But my husband does do the meat/chicken/whatever on the grill which helps. But I don't change my cooking habits by the season. But my husband wouldn't go for salads only for dinner - he's a big guy who has to eat!

I love smoothies! Lighter fair keeps us cooler too. You can make so many different types of sandwiches using different types of bread too. I came from CA where right now it's 109 this week. It was 82 here in Oregon and I had to laugh when I would hear people talk about how hot it is. I am embracing this heat.

I won't be out in it. Up in the 90's suddenly this week after nice 70's weather for quite a while.

Do you have a grill? That's a great way to cook without heating up the house.
