Antigua was our first Island to call into after crossing the Atlantic which took six days. The island is one of the Leeward islands. Quite a few people from the UK fly out here for their holidays.
The island is not particularly big. I took a bus down to the South of the Island to view the English Harbour and Nelson's dockyard. It was really beautiful with lovely bays and safe havens for yachts many of which will berth here if any big storms are due to hit.
The economy is kept ticking over by tourism and banking which forms a major part of the income to the island and its 80,000 inhabitants. They grow corn, sweet potatoes, chilli peppers, Guava, tobacco and cotton.
The most famous of Antiguans would be Sir Vivian Richards a superb cricketer. The cricket stadium is named after him and it looks a super venue.
Other famous inhabitants include John Barrowman, Eric Clapton, Richard Branson Oprah Winfrey.
There is widespread poverty especially in the Capital Port St. John.
We wandered around the town and up the hill to the cathedral only to find it derelict and vandalised. Windows smashed and overgrown graveyard. We wandered back down to the port area stopping for a cool drink before getting back on the ship and heading off.
Would I visit Antigua again? No I don't think I would. It was not my favourite island in the Caribbean.
The photo is of the English Harbour.

Thanks for the photo! My nephews are currently in Antigua, moored in English Harbour, having sailed from Portsmouth by way of Lisbon, the Canaries and Cabo Verde on their way round the world in a 40' yacht called TinTin. I'm following their progress through their blogs and other communications (which happen mostly whenever they are near a free WiFi). So far, it seems, they had a good time in Guadaloupe but I haven't heard much about Antigua so far.

@garymarsh6 Here's their blog. It's fascinating following them, especially as one can see a chart of their track in real time (link is on the right - "TinTin's Progress").
Tin Tin's Sailing Calendar Sunday, 8 January 2017 Antigua By the time I had finished with immigration and released the crew from the boat it was ten o'clock, and once ashore for a look at Nelson's Dockyard we were drawn to The Admirals Inn for brunch overl

@sallypup It is quite tragic really. I heard that they may restore it. I do hope so.

Well I think it is a bit more exclusive in that area but not in the city.

@garymarsh6, I enjoyed your post about Antigua and the photo was gorgeous. I did not know the vandals had come in and destroyed such a beautiful place. It is sad that we cannot enjoy some of the most beautiful places on the planet because of petty criminals. Thank you for sharing!

We saw some Bananas but I don't think it is a major export from there these days. St Lucia exports more!

It is such a shame that the cathedral is in such terrible condition, I never think of Antigua as poor!!

Most Caribbean countries are really not tourist friendly. The poverty is high.

Sint Maarten is a beautiful island and it seemed very well developed. Probably my most favourite island we visited.

It is beautiful in parts like many other places I guess. We live in such a beautiful world I just wish everyone would appreciate it too.
