Easter in the stores by LadyDuck

Here we go, it's this time of the year again, the shelves are full of rabbits and chocolate Easter eggs. For a chocolate lover, like I am, it is hard to resist to buy something. Do you know why bunnies are associated with Easter? The Easter hare originated in Germany. The folkloric figure had the role to evaluate which children had a good behavior and which ones were disobedient, in order to bring Easter eggs only to the good ones. Here is some photos of the shelves of our supermarket, full of eggs and bunnies. From now until Easter is the annual "chocolate torture", how to avoid to buy something you love? I am not partial, I love both chocolate bunnies and chocolate eggs. What of the two do you prefer?

I haven't been in a supermarket in weeks. I do love Cadbury's cream eggs or good boxed chocolate that isn't Easter related.

My favorite dark chocolate is Lindt and I usually buy boxed chocolates, but this year they have some very good dark chocolate eggs and I have not resisted.

It is more hens and eggs than bunnies in my area when it comes to chocolate, and there is also a local cake found only for Easter into the bakeries. It is a cake existing since the Antiquity and adopted by Christians. You give me the idea to start a discussion about it. I really like the look of these bunnies. Since I bred bunnies years ago, I do not eat any rabbit meat, but I would make an exception for a chocolate bunny.

@LadyDuck It is also the country of Descartes : I suppose they are hens and not roosters, because roosters do not lay eggs, and they are often filled with little eggs. If people are used to bunnies, I do not see why they would switch to bears. And the bunnies are really cute. The cake I was thinking at is the "cornuelle" : it is sold only in a few départements in Aquitaine. It is a kind of little "galette". It was done in the past for Palm Sunday, but you find it during all the months of March and April now.

I remember the beautiful carved eggs that the patisseries showed during the Easter time and also the Hens, we thought they were Roosters as it is the symbol of France. Lindt last year made Easter "bears" instead of bunnies because it is the symbol of Switzerland but they were a fiasco. I remember cakes shaped like nest in France. The Easter cake in Italy is the "Colomba" (the dove), it is similar to Panettone.

@topffer You are right, it's not sold in the French Riviera, but in Monaco they had something similar. A very hard galette, round, covered with small white and red confetti (the colours of Monaco).

I don't buy bunnies as I would eat the whole thing in one sitting. I did buy the small packs of Cadbury eggs - you get 12 in what looks like an egg carton. Those I can eat one or two and walk away. I always have chocolate in the house so walking right by the store display is easy.

I always have chocolate in the house, but when I saw the small eggs by Lindt I had to buy some to try. I like the fact that we are not obliged to by bags, but we can create our owns, adding only the chocolates we love.

I remember when I was a kid, they used to sell live colored bunnies and chicks in the grocery store. They were in big pens in the middle of the store. They came in red, blue, yellow, purple, green, and probably other colors. I only saw bunnies once, but chicks every year.

I had bunnies for friends back on the farm so it is kind of hard for me to eat them, even the chocolate ones. So I would choose eggs if I find them in dark chocolate. Happy Easter!

I thought you have a sudden influx of rabbits in your garden! That will be not fun, since rabbits are rather great eaters, and they will finish all the edibles in your garden.

@LadyDuck If you have a big warren of wild rabbits, you better have a big family of poor Chinese peasants, then they can cook the rabbits for dinner.
