Now THAT'S a knife!

Did you ever see the film Crocodile Dundee starring Paul Hogan? In the film, he visits New York and is accosted by two young thugs with knives. He whips out his own huge knife and brandishes it saying 'Now that's a knife'. Maybe this is what this Karen villager is saying. We spent three weeks in a Karen village in Thailand well north near the Myanmar border. There were six adults and ten 16-17-year-old boys. We helped the villagers of Ban Huey Pong Lao install a clean water supply. The photo was taken during a break for lunch. I googled Ban Huey Pong Lao to see if it featured anywhere and blow me down, there was a link to an article in the school's journal, complete with photo, about our visit there. We celebrated New Year twice that year, 1995. Once on board the plane and again a few hours after we landed in Bangkok in a different time zone. I'll add a link to the journal article. You'll need to scroll down a page or two to find the article and/or photo.

I blame them - and Steve Irwin - for everyone thinking that Australia is a dangerous place!

@Kandae11 It's okay because I've decided I don't want to share my paradise with too many others so if people stay away so much the better. MyLotters are okay though.

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - We watched the "Croc" movies on the video deal (after fixing it with a doggie bone) and my own favorite scene in the show was when the leading actor was tossed atop the crowd at the train station to help him catch up to the pretty girl who was leaving. Overall, that was a fun movie. The scene about the 2 hoodlums in NYC was far too true to life. NYC is a wart on the rear end of progress, for certain. Many times I was there, and each visit reinforced what had been learned during the prior visits; that is, "the flood cannot come soon enough." -Gus-

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - What I watched of the movie was on the TV, so maybe it was not the whole of it. That was back before 1990 or thereabouts as I recollect. -Gus-

I like keeping out of cities. I liked the scene where he shinned up a lamp-post and the mounted policeman helped him down. It must be time I watched it again as I've forgotten a lot of it.

I do remember that scene in Crocodile Dundee. I fell in love with the movie at that point. For some reason, the link will not completely load for me. Commendable that you were helping install a clean water source!

Might be best not to think about it. He and Vince used to have competitions with gings. All the menfolk had these too and were remarkably accurate with them.

That was a long time ago. We would have liked to have gone again but it wasn't to be. It is nice to do stuff rather than just be a tourist but it's hard to find the right 'fit' sometimes.

The expression gets trotted out here from time to time. If it's not 'Now THAT'S a knife, it might be 'Now THAT'S a car' or whatever.

I think Asian countries do have this kind of knife. We have also like this in the house. It is a perfect tool for gardening and to cut the grasses.

I suppose out in the wild a knife is more of a tool than the instrument we think it is

That's very true. It was mostly used for slashing through any thick patches of jungle. The jungle was surprisingly open compared to what I thought it would be. We would walk an hour in the mornings to reach a spot high up where there was a natural spring and few animals contaminating the water. We built a small cement tank there to catch the water and filter it (through gravel) before it gravity-fed through PVC pipes down to the village.

@JudyEv - Well, I have lived all over the U.S., including in the South, the Midwest and in California, and I have never heard anyone in our country use the expression. That's why I think it must be an Australian term ... although one which is easy to understand.

It was a strange period. In Thailand we went to a restaurant for a coffee and a group were playing 'Take me home, country roads' in English. That seemed pretty odd too.
