Would you like to stay on high rise apartment?

Due to limited availability of land and ever increasing population in developing countries constructing residential houses is becoming a big issue. As the land is limited and it cannot be expanded further, instead of horizontal expansion, vertical expansion is taking place in many cities. The high rise buildings are constructed in limited space with numerous floor (depending upon the area/city/country). The floors in a residential tower goes up to 20-30 and may be even higher. Some of us may be staying in high rise building apartments. I would like to know those who live on higher floors (say above fifth floor) how do they feel when they live in a higher floor? Does the scenic view, availability of fresh air and sunlight and less pollution make them feel that it is better to live on upper floor rather than on a ground floor? What is opinion of those who stay on ground floor, first or second floors etc. about staying in an apartment on a higher floor (e.g. on tenth floor on wards). Image courtesy - Google

You could say whatever you feel like. You could imagine a situation where you are asked to stay at tenth floor, in that case how would you feel? I was very much active here, it was you who were absent from mylot platform.

I don't think I'd like to live so high up. It could be quite claustrophobic. I've never liked living in towns but I have to say that when you close the door, then you're home and the outside environment doesn't matter so much.

If given the opportunity, you are not going to opt to stay in a high rise building because it could make you feel claustrophobic. It is partially true that when you are inside the home and have closed your doors, you forget what lies outside your house.

@LadyDuck - Yes, you have made a very valid point that in case of fire, those living on the higher floors, would be in deep trouble and may be caught in a precarious situation.

I agree, imagine in case of fire to try to climb down 70 floors... if you are lucky enough that the stairs have not caught fire, because the stairs work like a chimney when there is a fire, the flames come up at an incredible speed.

One thing that always puzzles me about these sky scraper is what if lift fails? How do people reach thier by steps let's say 20th floor and in case of fire accidents and earthquake like calamity, people in higher floors are in more danger.

Yes, it is a kind of big worry if lift fails to work what would happen. Climbing up stairs would be an uphill task. In case of fire or earth quake also, those living on higher floors will face more danger. Having said that land is shrinking therefore, vertical expansion of the houses will continue to take place.

@vijay_2016 Yes, you are right that density of population is increasing in tier A and tier B cities and lots and lots of people from rural areas and semi-rural areas come in search of employment in big cities. It not only adds to housing problem but water, electricity and traffic problems also increase many folds. Government should seriously do something about it.
19 Apr 17
@dpk262006 the problem is growing population in cities. Decentralisation of development should be done so that population won't be crowded in cities, and space crunch won't occur. This solves space, water and traffic problems.

Hi my friend, how have you been? I prefer to stay on the ground floor. First of all, I am scared of high. Second, after what happened in US years ago I think if's safer to be on the ground so I can run quicker...

@Nawsheen This is exactly what I have stated in discussion that due to shortage of land, only option left is to go for vertical expansion of houses. In that case high rise buildings are bound to come and people will have no choice but to live in high rise buildings.

@dpk262006 nowadays we have lots of people living in cities and this number is bound to increase and the only.solution will be apartments. I was once watching a documentary about Hongkong and they have luxurious apartments over there which costs a fortune. My point is no matter how much restrictions they face people will have to adapt to live in apartments

I've stayed in high rise hotels . . . but having to live in it would make me nervous. Being that I live in a place where there are earthquakes, I certainly would not want to live way up high, nor at the very bottom - too scary. I'll stick to our one story house .

Yes, most of us prefer to stay at the lower floor, be it ground/first/second floor. Living on a high rise gives a kind of goose bums , thinking about earthquakes and sudden fire its. However, due to shortage of space, vertical expansion is taking place in most of the Metro cities here in India.

@dpk262006 I hope all those vertical expansions are safe! I would think too that it would cause traffic in the elevators or even the stairs (if anyone dares to take the stairs in living on the higher floors ).

@ridingbet Yes, you are very right that on higher floor, when feels the impact of earth quake more. Your second point is also worth pondering over - whether these high rise buildings make adequate arrangements for fire exists? I think some of the high rise do not have firm arrangements in case of sudden fire.

I have lived in Monte-Carlo 27 years, it's the second smaller state in the world and for this reason there are only high rise buildings. I hate living on high floors for many reasons, in case of earthquake everything falls on the floor, the higher you are the more the building shake. In case of fire, we know that the fire goes up and you cannot use the elevators and may be you cannot even use the stairs, you are trapped there.

@LadyDuck Yes, it is safer to stay on a lower floor in a hotel, in case of any mishap, you could at least hope to save yourself. I once stayed on 26th Floor in a hotel in Mumbai, the view from the top was no doubt awesome but the unknown fear of fire or any mishap was always in mind.

@dpk262006 Even when I book a high rise hotel I always ask for a low floor room. I do not want to have a problem and to be blocked on the upper floors. It happened in Los Angeles that the 28th floor of our hotel had a fire during the night. All the floors from the 26th up to the top were evacuated. I was so happy to be on the 2nd floor.
