I used to operate my broadband via an unsecured wireless router in order to let my neighbour use it. The problem was that others started connecting and I was never sure who was using it. This could have been a problem since they could operate illegally and it would register as my IP address, so I installed WEP encryption and MAC filtering to eliminate other users.

you can do this and still let a neighbor use it especially if he shared the cost.

We pay for ours, but I'm pretty sure my neighbors on both sides use it too. We don't really care, though. After all, any time our dogs get a chance they go steal their dogs' food and they don't come knocking down our door. I guess we just don't think it's a big deal since it doesn't affect our internet connection at all.

I don't. This is stealing, and I won't feel good about myself knowing that I steal from my neighbor.

I could only stand to do that for so long. I'd eventually have to give up and stop doing that because I think it's rather unfair to continously steal someone else's property. It is stealing.

yes, in my country the internet rate is not alway flat, they charge accoring your usage bandwith, if your neighbour use the capacity based billing then you are make a realy big problem to your neightbour, it best that you discuss it with your neightbour first

I think it's time I buy a wireless adaptor and see if anyone has wifi around here, but I bet no one does hahaha... if they didn't care putting a code to let unauthorized use then I guess it's okay. It's not like you can tap into their computer, can you?

We have a wireless router and we have a lock on it for safety , I just don't wasn't people to know my business , If someone is paying a flat rate for their server and they don't have a lock on it , then I think it as as much as say they don't care , I haven't really thought about it before this discussion xx

well.... i did this once but quite frankly i did not feel guilty at the time. I never looked at it from the point of stealing his internet connection. Goes to show what we can do if we think its not wrong. I guess I would do it again if the circumstances were dire otherwise I would just do without or get my own. I would definitely hate it if someone stole my internet. Double standards huh

I use my neighbors connection from time to time when mine is slow. I was honest with her about it and offered to split it with her but she didn't want to take the whole amount so I give her eight dollars a month. To me that's more than fair and if my service is down or slow I know I canuse hers as a backup. Nothing lasts forever, what are you going to do if this neighbor gets wise, changes service, moves, puts a key in or starts snooping to see who is using the connection?

I probably do. lol In my area some people do'nt care if you use their wifi or maybe they don't know how to puit a key to avoid unauthorize use of theier connection. I currently work as a DSL technician and we have wireless connection where we share the connection to others for free, maybe soon we will ask for little fee if they want to use the wifi.

I was not aware that it could be done! How do you go about doing this? Just curious, as I could imagine a lot of other people are.

I probably would if I had the right equipment and knowledge to do so yes! I know in a sense it is theft, but I don't think one person alone utilises their internet connection at any one given time. Personally it is was me and the shoe was on the other foot, I would rather pay for a service and get my monies worth by sharing it, than paying full price and using half a service. I don't think it will have much effect on your neighbours connection, it depends what you are using it for, general surfing wouldn't effect it, but if you are using it to download large files than the quality of connection for your neighbour will be affected.

I would absolutely do it. Then again I expect the same, in fact I would offer the same in return given the situation as reversed. However, I would be extra cautious to not do anything that would in any way hinder their enjoyment of its use e.g. too much bandwidth, illegal sites, etc. Unless I was sharing some of the cost of it.

i did it once but since i only stayed there (stayed in ruislip manor in middlesex for vacation) for a week, didn't have a chance to find which of the neighbors using the wireless internet connection. anyway, using other's internet connection without them knowing is still stealing in my opinion. why don't you talk to your neighbor and let him know that you discovered that you can actually connect to the internet using their wireless router and talk in splitting the monthly bill between you two? i think that is the right thing to do.

he he he...i'm in a hotel parking lot using their internet right now. it's not a neighbor, and if I had one that did it, I probably would - simply because they don't have a network key on it... I'm still debating on whether it's really stealing if you don't have a network key on it, you know?

Well, this is going to be a interesting question. Just like if you are thirty and you found a dollar, will you take it and buy yourself a drink? I use to visit my parents and my parent do subscribe to a wireless service provider but then there is a unsecure wireless in the nearby, at time, I was connected to the unsecure wireless without knowing it. I felt that it is ok to use it but do not do anything illegal. Recently on newspaper, a guy was caught by using other unsecure wireless to make a hoax email claiming that there is a bomb at the public bus stop and he was caught by the police. The poor owner of the unsecure wireless had her house visited by police and the police conducted a raid at her house.

I wouldn't. Not because it's stealing, but because it might not be a secure connection & I wouldn't want to get hacked or get viruses or have my identity stolen and whatnot.
