THEY KEPT ON TRYING.

After fourteen years of marriage and six daughters in a row, a couple in my neighborhood finally welcomed a son. Now they must raise seven children instead of the four they had originally planned to have. it seems the husband was determined to have a son and I can't help wondering if the little guy hadn't arrived when he did - would they have kept on trying? So - did you get exactly what you wanted when you started your family? - and if not -would you keep on trying - or be content with what you got?

I know a family with five wonderful daughters but they never managed to have the son they wanted. He was a farmer and wanted a son to carry on the farm. All the girls have careers on or to do with the land.

The guy I wrote about is a farmer as well- a small one. He has about ten acres of food crops and a few cattle.

@Kandae11 All farmers, certainly in days gone by, were anxious to have a son to carry on the farm.

It is really crazy on the part of some couples they keep on making babies for want of a son. They do not realize that it is difficult to bring up more number of children. World is fast changing, in today's world both girls and boys are equal and are given equal importance while bringing them up. Due to madness of such couples, male-female ratio in many parts of the world is getting affected. In some of the States of India male-female ration is - 850/1000 means 850 females per 1000 males. If there will be less population of females, men will marry whom?

@Kandae11 - Yeah, you are right that people are still carrying the legacy of old Kinds and Lords. The mind set of people are changing but not the extent required. In some of the countries e.g. Indonesia females outscore males.

I think this obsession began many centuries ago when Kings and Lords needed a male heir to succeed them. Both men and women have important roles to play for the continuity of life on this planet, therefore ideally there should be a 50/50 ratio.

In traditional Chinese, they prefer to have a son. They cannot continue to bear a lot of children because of the one-child policy. If they don't have this policy, perhaps they can have a lot of children targeting to have a son in the family.

I think that one-child policy caused a lot of additional problems.

@Kandae11 You said it right. I had read that some couples get rid of the unborn infant if they found out that it is a girl in China. That's the reason why it was banned in clinics or hospitals to use diagnostic ultrasound.

He has a small farm , so at least they wouldn't starve- but I am not sure about their chances for college - unless his financial status changes.

@Kandae11 I cannot afford to send either of my girls to college. Any schooling they desire is on their own heads. What I don't like is that we may not be able to afford to provide them with any part of a wedding either, but they both know and understand our finances and know they may need to save toward that themselves. My dad was self-employed and mom worked until I was born and then again when the youngest was almost done with school. Although they didn't send any of us to college, I do have one sister that went under her own steam. They were able to pay for my first marriage at least. I know know whether they continued with the rest of my siblings as most of us married at a later age, myself included the second time around.

No kids here and it is exactly what I want. Though I have had friends one of each gender actually who were almost angry they didn't get what they wanted. One guy used to tell his daughter that she was a "mistake" because she wasn't a boy. :-( That's a jerk thing to do. No wonder the girl acted up.

@Kandae11 So true, I find it very sad. :-( So, it may not be the gender you wanted, but it is your child....

Wow, six daughters before having a boy. We have 2 girls and a boy. Yes, we did get exactly what we wanted, as we wanted one of each, but no matter what we had (all girls or all boys), I think we would have stopped at three. My son is the youngest, and most people thought we were having another girl. But I didn't think so. Either way, we would have been happy with what we had. So long as they're healthy, that's the main thing.

@Kandae11 Exactly. So long as they are healthy, that's the main thing. As much as I wanted to have a boy and a girl, my kids being healthy was more important to me.

When I was five months pregnant, friends decided that I was getting a girl because of the way I looked so I started looking up names for girls. However, a month later an ultra sound showed that my baby was a boy , and I was still happy.

My husband and I decided not to have kids and we've been very happy with that decision. I think 7 children is kind of a crazy number. And why the obsession with having a son? Who cares?

We cannot blame the guy if he wanted a son. If it's the couple's decision it is a good thing for them, at least if they can support the needs of their children

Wow I bet he will be spoiled by all the family, bless them all. I originally wanted a boy and a girl, I got my wish and then decided another boy would be lovely, And once again I was lucky, then I thought maybe my daughter would like a sister but her sister ended up being another brother, but she adored him anyway and four was definitely enough financially although I would have loved more, I now have three grandsons and One Granddaughter, so in a round about way I did have more.
