Childhood beliefs from my parents!

This discussion is stemmed from a post by the pretty user @bluesa where she mentioned about her sun-catcher and I commented on a prism that shows the colors of the rainbow when the sun’s rays are reflected in the sun-catcher. And since it is the rainy season now, I thought of sharing you some childhood beliefs that my late parents told me. One is: we should not point our index finger directly to the rainbow because our index finger might melt like a candle. So what I did when I was a little girl was, I would point at the rainbow with all my right hand’s fingers, so all of them will melt at the same time. Another one is, we should call our spirits back when we are out of the house at dusk, or in a place unfamiliar to us. The “come back, Ingrid” or “come home now, J”, is what I usually say up to this time. My mother said that my spirit might be left behind or some unseen entities might not allow me to go back home. There are lots more to share, but I am going out to the city for some errands, and I will be back later to check on this site. How about you, can you share some beliefs that you still believe in until now?

I remember my mother still insists on not cutting nails at night. there is a folklore of one female demon who comes at night to take people who cut their nails at night. when cutting nails they also say never keep them at home and throw into dustbin as soon as possible as nails bring bad omen on money in house.

I have not heard about the 2nd belief you mentioned but the 1st one. My parents used to tell us that and I was scared and didn't do it. However, when I saw the rainbow last year when I was in Pinas, I remembered what my parents said and I immediately pointed my finger towards the rainbow. My nieces were shouting to me "No". I did and I still have my finger.

so, even if you are already an adult, you still heeded to the advice of your nieces. they believe in that, right? good to know you still have complete set of fingers.

@ridingbet I forgot about that superstitious beliefs until last year I saw the rainbow with my nieces. They really believed it and not they know it's not true. I was courageous enough to point my finger at it..

We do believe for the second belief. If a person is not at home, we tend to use the clothes of the person by swaying the clothes outside and calling his or her name.

@thelme55 do you believe in the practice of waving your ladle facing the door so the person you want to come home will be uneasy and eventually wants to go home?I do that sometimes ,while I am cooking.

Right, then we call out the name of whoever is still out of the house. "Umaycaaann Ingrid". (Come home now Ingrid ).

My mother used to hang the clothes of one of her kids over the smoke of the dirty kitchen. She meant that was one way of calling her son home. Weird @Shavkat

I can only remember one, spiders in the house bring money, never kill a spider, at most capture it and bring it outside.

my son has arachnophobia, and whenever he sees a spider, any time of the day, he tries to kill it with a broom. i have not heard of that belief, my friend, but now i know, i will try to drive the spider out our house if ever i see one.

@ridingbet :) , we were told to not look at a candle flame because then we would struggle to sleep and to not kill a spider or it would not rain during a dry spell. I did not know about calling our spirits back or pointing at a rainbow, very interesting. :)

well, on the contrary, when we stare at a burning candle in its flame, our eyes should get droopy, in my opinion. hahah! different viewpoint for me. if that superstition about killing a spider will bring rains, i think somebody should do that, so our grounds here will be wet with rain

Yeah...We also have some belief like... * If we see more dragon fly on sky...It is the indication of rain... *Should not keep bucket at entrance of house...It is the indication of bad news. * Also ladies should not comb hair after sun set ,it is also same indication of bad omen *It is also considered that is inauspicious to sweep the floor at night *It is believed that If a cat crosses our path, it will bring bad luck . *Shaking legs is considered to invite bad luck. * It is believed that looking in a broken mirror may bring bad luck * If someone sneezes before you’re about to travel or do something important, it is a bad omen

well, there are some beliefs you mentioned here that we also practice, like sweeping at night, not combing at night, a broken mirror should be thrown at once because it denotes 7 years of bad luck, sneezing before someone leaves should be counteracted by not letting the person leave.

haha! no, with my action of pointing at the rainbow with all my fingers, would mean disaster to me if all of my fingers melt. that would be a dumb action.

We believed that if a cat is crying near our house someone is gonna die , and we prefer never to look back while walking alone on street at night , even if you feel there is someone behind because they say if you do you are never gonna return ..and..yes !,my mother also told me never to open a door at The first knock wait for three more knocks because its believed that bad spirits never knock more than 2 times and gets annoyed and leave ( to knock at someone else's house )

My mum and grandma used to tell us not to stand under trees at dusk else we might get possessed by a spirit. Not to go outside at night with our hair open
