Sam's Club and bulk buying

United States

Here we are at the start of another new month. I can't believe that summer will officially be here in just a few short weeks. As for spring...it was very disappointing with very little sunshine and lots of rain. Today the sun is shining which always makes me smile. I wanted to have my coffee on the deck this morning but the guys were here doing the mowing and I didn't want to sit outside with all that noise and the mowed grass making me sneeze. Yesterday my daughter went to Sams Club and got us quite a bit of food (mostly meat) which I had to divide into smaller packages this morning and put them in the freezer. It's more affordable for us to buy bigger packages and then have enough for a few weeks. I'm always looking to save money (even if it's pennies) so some things pay to buy in bulk. Now we probably don't have to do any grocery shopping for at least two weeks except for picking up milk and bread etc. One of my best investments was buying a chest freezer when I moved here so I have the luxury of having lots of freezer space. I keep it in the garage so it's only a few steps away from the kitchen. This also gives me a great opportunity to buy more when things I need are on sale. The next thing on my agenda is to get gas for the barbecue. We ran out last weekend and now that I have good food to barbecue it would be a shame to have to cook inside. I'm already feeling excited about summer. The only thing missing is a pool for swimming. How's things in your neck of the woods today?

You know me by now and I agree with the deep freezer and stocking while its cheap, but there is some thing else I want to share with you that Tony learned many years ago. He did roofing, it was a 3 generation business, the hot tar and gravel type. They used propane to heat the tar pot. So when we bought a gas grill he said " turn off the tank after each use and it`ll last a long time." this works once we cooked out twice a week and the small tank lasted all Summer. More savings!

Thanks Andria for the gas tip. Anything that will help it last longer is appreciated.

@Marilynda1225 Your welcome. I like to share savings tips, some may know some may not. I am also one to listen to them as well. Everything is so expensive and its hard to make our dollars go far.

Buying in bulk does save money. Sun not shining here looks like more rain this afternoon.

Things are good, a bit chilly inside compared to out, but otherwise good. I like shopping at Sam's for the same reason. Bulk is so much better on the budget.

The original outlay of the money is a bit hard but for us when we don't have to shop for a few weeks it all evens out.

My boyfriend's mother got a membership there and he has a card and we go monthly now. We stock up on a lot of things that we know we'll need and use like paper towels, cleaning supplies, condiments, toilet paper, body wash, deodorant, etc. We need to make our way back to there again because I want to start stocking stuff up for my dorm room next year.

Well, June 1 is the start of the Atlantic hurricane season, and it is predicted to be a very active one. Apart from that, I hope to have a lovely summer.

Do you get hit with many hurricanes there?

@Marilynda1225 Not as much as Florida. The worst in recent years was hurricane Sandy in 2012. Matthew was a big one last year, but it passed us by and hit Haiti , Cuba and the U.S. coast instead. Some years we are lucky.

I have a full freezer and refrigerator. We always buy our papergoods at Sam's. I am going to try to spend most of my time at home today. I just finished my breakfast and my second cup of coffee.

We also bought an additional freezer that is in the basement, near the laundry room. I like to buy food when it is on sale. I like the month of June, not so much summer, it's too hot.

I'm not crazy about the hot days of summer either. They fall into the same category as the bitter cold winter days. I'm a between type of person i guess

We used to shop at Sam's but it's over an hour ride each way now so we don't bother. Things are wonderful today!

When we were closer to Sam's we bought a lot of meat there, but now it's well over an hour each direction and it's in Knoxville and we dread going there - way too much traffic LOL! We do have a freezer which is full to capacity right now, but that's my husband's area....I opened it once and stuff jumped out at me!

@Marilynda1225 If we had to go to Knoxville for any other reason and then shopped at Sam's it would be ok....but just to go there..not viable. Our freezer has all kinds of things - garden veggies, cakes, dill -

My freezer is stocked pretty full now too but it's got all sorts of things besides meat. Traveling that distance to Sams Club probably isn't worth the time or gas for you guys

Here we are going into winter and already have had a couple of cold fronts and a lot of rain for May. In the west of our country Cape Town is in the worst drought in 100 years and has 9% water resources left. Today they went on Cat 4 water restriction (100 litres of water per person per day!)
• United States
2 Jun 17
that must be horrible to have to restrict your water to such a degree. We take having water for granted here

@Marilynda1225 Yes we all take water for granted. We can do without electricity but not water. Here the media is trying to advise the public on saving water. One of their sayings is "Water does not come from a tap!"

Our spring has mostly been the same. Had some 70-85° days but not too many. Most days have been around 50. Which i guess is normal temp wise for spring but been very cold feeling.

I just got back from a med appt and doing okay just Lotting. Nice to hear you got the good bunch of meat now to bbq! Not sure what else I am doing to day but doing some paperwork again. Yes a pool would be nice..something that I too love. Luckily there is one here in the apt complex I live. But it is usually crowded with kids if you don't get there very early.

I live in a community but we don't have a pool. At least I can go visit my daughter over the summer and swim in their community pool.

It's sunny but the cool breeze means that by evening the furnace will likely kick in. I wish it would warm up.
