It is possible. You are eating raw fish, after all. But that is why they always provide wasabi with the sushi, because the wasabi actually helps kill bacteria and helps protect you from food poisoning.
In general, if the sushi is prepared correctly, then there usually isn't anything to worry about.

If it is prepared wrong then yes it can kill you. If it sits out too long and gets hot it can get you really sick. There are also certain kinds of fish that are poisonous but you can eat them if they are prepared right. The Blowfish is an example of that. Any foods that aren't prepared properly can kill you or get you sick.
