Life Is Filled With Opportunities

Last month my oldest granddaughter graduated from high school and will be going to college in the fall.
She got a job at the Brooklyn Aquarium in New York for the summer and loves it. In our recent conversation she told me that now she's thinking of studying marine biology instead of following her choice of psychology.
It's wonderful how an experience in life can change the path you choose and I hope my granddaughter follows her dreams.
Back in my day we didn't have as many opportunities (or if we did we didn't know about them).
Did you follow your dreams?

Good for her.
I was always told by the educators in our family, that a good student will change their mind at least once during their first year of post secondary education. Our son originally wanted to be a teacher, he's a social worker.
I always wanted to be an occupational therapist, but my parents wouldn't send me to school. They were old school thinkers and believed that a woman's place was in the home, and they were not about to spend their money on a degree for me. They actually made me go to a private high school, where tuition was due for 3 years and I was responsible for paying for that. If nothing else it taught me to learn to save as I would work during the summer months and then have to pay for my tuition, books and the annual fee for me to take the country bus. It wasn't easy, but I did it.

@Marilynda1225 Thank you Marilyn. My mother once told me that my older brother and I were "smart" enough to make it at university, but our younger 2 brothers were not, so they didn't want any of us to go. My biggest hope was to send our son to university, now he has 3 degrees! But I was SO proud of him every time that I went up to the campus to pick him up or drop him off after a visit. And it never ever bothered me to work full time as I was doing it to pay his rent while he was in school. Funny, what will give you drive.

that's why you have such a good head on your shoulders now Julia you have high work ethics. I'm sure my grandchildren will change their minds too as time goes on and they complete their education.

I totally agree with you that when we were young we didn't have the opportunities our kids have today. Not only that, we weren't encouraged as much as our children are. They have motivational speakers come to schools and of course they're all over YouTube. My only dream was to be a mother and I never thought beyond that. I wish I had. My life is more than half over and feel I've missed out on a lot and wish I could have done things differently. My kids appear to be following their dreams... dreams that have changed a couple of times. I am glad they are and am very proud of them.

I became a mother at a pretty young age so my start in a nursing career was short lived. I don't regret being a mom but I didn't have the opportunities my children or grandchildren have today. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and see what career path I would have followed

@Marilynda1225 If I could go back I would choose a different high school. That is when my downfall began. I know my whole life would be different than it is now but my life isn't so great so it would be nice to start over at that point.

When I went to school we could be hairdressers, teachers or secretaries - I always wanted to be a secretary. My parents made me go to college, which I detested. Finally they gave in sent me to secretarial school - that was what I wanted all along...I worked 35 years and never regretted a day of being s 'secretary'...of course by the time a few decades went by we were called administrative assistants!

@Marty1 I had three long-term (10 years each) jobs and build up nice 401Ks and that got us a good start in retirement.

And now those Administrative Assistants have their own day to celebrate too!! Life is different now isn't it. I started to pursue a career in baby nursing but then got married and had my own babies to care for.

I never followed my dreams because I never really had any. I've only ever really known what I don't want to do but never known with any certainty what I do want to do.
I sort of drifted into my career, partially due to my parents, who always struggled for money, encouraging me to get a steady, well paid job.
If I had my time over I would invest more time and effort in writing at a young age.

Sometimes I still think I don't know what I want to be when I grow up but my life has been satisfying raising children and having many different jobs. I'm sure you would have been very good at writing

@Marilynda1225 Thank you, although it may not have paid the bills quite so well as the career I ended up in. I probably wouldn't have spent the vast majority of my working life being incredibly bored though!!

I hope your granddaughter follows her dreams. I did but not until I was in my forties. I let a college counselor talk me out of my chosen field which was teaching. At the time there were far more teachers than positions. Now they're crying for teachers.

Nowadays no one is too old to follow their dreams. Glad you were able to follow yours even if it took a few years

@Marilynda1225 I never regretted going back to school and picking up another degree. I enjoyed teaching far more than working in the lab. Now I enjoy watching others grumble about going to work when I'm free to do whatever I want.

I'm sure she will love every minute of her job. Many students suddenly come across the love of a career by accident. I wish her the best!
I wanted to be a heart surgeon during my high school years. My mother talked me out of that saying that it would be a waste of time, since I would marry and stay home with my children. She told me to marry a doctor instead. That was the thinking back then. I became an educator, my second love, and married a doctor. She never specified what kind! I was lucky in my career choice. It allowed me years of being home to raise my boys, and when I returned, I had time for carpools, vacations, free summers, and days off, all with a hefty paycheck.

Who knows if she'll change her mind a million times before she finishes college. I just hope she finds something she loves so going to work every day isn't boring

I most certainly did. I wanted to be a traveler for my entire life. And because I am a freelancer and a well paid one too, I can actually live my dreams. It's awesome. I write blogs and articles as a ghost writer. And I get paid well enough by my clients for writing my traveling experiences. :)

She really surprised me when she got a job there as I never thought it would be something that would interest her. I guess being surrounded by sealife has given her a different insight to a career

Congratulation to you grand daughter. Unfortunately I wasn't able to pursue my dream. As a kid I want to be a soldier. Now, I'm a Nurse, the profession that I hate the most when I'm a kid.
