Many of us are fond of fruits and consuming fruits is part of our daily life. However, there is another category of fruits which is called 'dry fruits' or 'dried fruits'. Famous among dry fruits are - Almonds, cashew nuts, walnuts, raisins, pistachio, dried apricots, dried strawberries and pine nuts etc. Some of the dry fruits help us to maintain our cholesterol level. For example cashews nuts contain zero cholesterol, pistachios contain fats that are helpful in lowering high cholesterol levels. Dry fruits are generally rich in iron, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium etc. Do you include dry fruits in your daily diet or do you take it occasionally or you do not believe in taking dry fruits at all? No doubt dry fruits are expensive because of more demand and less supply. However, we could sometimes buy it.

It is indeed a good idea to keep some dry fruits in our pocket or at work place because in case of hunger pangs, it helps us consume dry fruits. Which one do you keep at your work place?

Yes, you are right that preservatives might be added to preserve the ''dried fruits''. My emphasis was on nuts. Do you like to take nuts/dry fruits? Welcome to mylot family.

No. Dried fruits are so much different from the fresh variety. ANd, the outer skin is usually hard to chew.

No... I don't. I am a foodie...and I can't stop eating..lol ..Cashews can really add fat, and almonds more than 5 in a day are not good, and walnuts give an oily taste in mouth...etc. etc.

It is fine if you do not take dry fruits. However, I would like to add that one could take 23 almonds in a day and these are good for health. Specially, when you soak few almonds overnight, peel their skin in the morning and then consume it, then it is good for health. You could like wise with walnut kernel. Cashews have comparatively less minerals but it could be taken once in a while.

@dpk262006 ..Somewhere I read it is only 5...beyond which cyanide starts accumulating in blood...now that is dangerous because I can eat 23 almonds...soaked or otherwise...

We do have almonds, cashews, pistachios etc around the house and eat them often. But dried fruit we eat sparingly. I was told to treat dried fruit like candy - in the way of sugar content (dried fruit and juices have concentrated natural sugars). But then again dried fruits has many more nutritional benefits than candy of course. I do like Turkish apricots!

@much2say I also prefer to take almonds and pistachios. Though cashew is very tasty but in terms of nutrients it comes after almonds, walnuts and pistachios.

It is good to hear that you regularly take almonds, cashews and pistachios. These dry fruits have lots of minerals and nutrients and they are good for our health. Yes, you are right that dried fruits may contain extra sugar content to preserve them, which is not good for our health. May be Turkish apricots are more delicious, therefore, you like them.

@LadyDuck If you want them crunchy it is your choice. I am not sure if dry fruits lose their properties if soaked overnight.

My parents have maintained the habit of eating dry fruit , the first thing to eat in morning and in their sixties they are more fit and active than their neighbours and friends. I have learned this habit from them and me and my family eat dry fruit every day.

We also take soaked almonds and walnut carnal in the morning. These become very soft, once these remain soaked in water through out the night. I am wondering what makes you not like the taste. Taking protein powder made of nuts is not a bad idea but it may be less healthier or it may have less nutrients than whole nuts.

Dry fruits are good for health, but they are very expensive. We can't afford to have dry fruit. So we buy dry fruits once a while. Mostly we buy on occasions when we prepare sweets at home.

No doubt that dry fruits are expensive because there is demand and supply gap. The production of dry fruits is limited but the demand is more. Also, imported dry fruit is also costly.
