I posted recently about crocheting an outfit for a stuffed koala. We gave the koala to a friend’s daughter. She has recently started crocheting after having learnt it at school quite some time ago. She showed me her ‘nativity set’ and I’ll share it here. All the major characters are included as well as three sheep, a camel, ox and donkey. I thought they were just lovely. Her latest project is an afghan rug made of a number of different patterned squares. She has a book of patterns and I was able to help her interpret some of the more difficult patterns. She now has about 30 patterns made - and only needs another 90!

That's an awesome nativity scene! She is doing very well, from the looks of it. She must be quite ambitious to start an afghan that needs 120 pieces!

@JudyEv It would take some time for anyone! She probably doesn't realize how long or how boring it will be to sew together that many pieces.

@peavey With more experience she will probably learnt to crochet them together as she toes. Some of the granny squares have 4 or 5 colours which means there are also dozens of 'ends' to sew in.

I think it might take her quite a while to finish her rug. Once she has done the pieces she then has to sew them all together. If it were me I'd crochet them together as I went.

I love the Nativity scene. It is wonderful that you are helping her out. I remember teaching many children to crochet when I was doing daycare.

@JudyEv They sure are. I taught my two youngest sisters and my youngest brother how to knit. Ron is the only one that remembers how to knit.

@velvet53 It probably wouldn't take the others long to cotton on again though.

I have taught adults but not children. Some are all fingers and thumbs to start with aren't they?

@judyev Your title depresses me. Maybe I'll stuff a koala this Christmas.

Good idea - but why pick on koalas? There must be some feral Irish animals you can choose.

@xFiacre No wonder you go off in realms of fantasy if you are dealing with ferals!

@teamfreak16 We had a sea-faring friend who used to knit but only scarves. He said he never learnt how to cast off so he ended up with a very long scarf.

@JudyEv - Rosie Greer, who played American football for the Los Angeles Rams in the 70's did it. A big tough guy.

Wow!! This is Cute. I wish I had the patience and could make something like this, as I am sure it would be a Good money maker and hit. The afghan sounds quite creative as well.

i noticed the sheeps immediately, but wasn't sure about the animals at the back. it's like she awakened a dormant talent at the rate she's going.

The camel looks quite strange although you can't see it properly here. She is doing really well with her crochet.

@JudyEv I had several books of crochets, now I have to see if they are on the shelves or still hidden in boxes in the basement.

I'm not sure I could be bothered with all the fiddling to put wool on the sheep, beards on the men, etc. My friend had a book with all the figures in it.

Wow. I love learning new things. How I wish I could learn crocheting too. I really think it's very creative. And for me it's good if you're skilled in this craftmaking most especially if you want to give personalized gifts to your loved ones

@JudyEv definitely. I hope to get some that are personalized ... it feels heartwarming, knowing that the gift was made with much effort and time. And those are two things money CAN'T ever buy

Your friends daughter did an amazing job on those!!! I would love a set of them for under my tree! I have a feeling the set (porcelain) won't be used this year as my youngest is a toddler who doesn't like the word no. I'd hate to have them break since they were my mom's.

Best to keep your porcelain set for a few more years. It would certainly be a shame to break any of them.

It's much better 'winging' crochet than knitting. Much easier to pull some out and start off again if you have to.
