Money saving tips from my recent life

So I noticed that I have been able to keep better tabs on my spending recently and thought I would share with you all what the difference, for me has been. Bringing in more money, at the moment , isn't an option for me. So, instead I knew I would have to adjust my spending. I went from making charge card payments and charging them right back to max by the end of the month, to making the payments and not using them. I discovered that it is equally as important to not use the cards, as it is to making larger then minimum payments. At first it was hard because I didn't know where the money was going. I didn't buy any one thing or things that were expensive during a month. I started by looking at optional, reoccurring bills. For example - Netflix. I really didn't enjoy it or use it anymore. Cancel! Even though it's under $10 - it still counts. Another example was an annual magazine subscription. A cooking one, where I really didn't enjoy the food style they feature. I canceled it online and not only will it not automatically re-new, they refunded me for the unsent issues. * I don't currently have cable TV or an expensive cell phone plan (mine is quite minimum) - but if I had- those would have been next. From there I reconsidered my buying of sale items at the grocery store. - Normally, I had taken pleasure in stocking up on items when they went on sale, even if I had plenty of it already. That may be fine reasoning if you take in quite enough money. However if you are on a budget that can get expensive - quickly. I have quelled thoughts of "missing out on a good deal" with the thought that by the time I need said items - there will likely be another sale. Small item impulse purchases have also dropped down way down. Often times I would buy plenty of small items. These things only cost $1-$5 , but - if you do that enough times in a row - it counts up. These are things like - that extra soda and bag of chips when you get gas. I also like to take cans of soda or water in a to-go bottle when I leave home. Fast food meals. Those are really tricky. I have tried to cut down on what I order or cut them out completely. Also I have supplemented my video renting with using the local library which is no cost. That seems to be what is helping me the most and I hope that these tips can help some of you if you need. Photo: Pixabay

I see your logic in all but the stocking up on grocery items when they are on sale. I do that and over the year it saves a fortune.

@FayeHazel You also need plenty of storage space. I do occasionally go OTT and it looks like I am preparing for some kind of emergency where food will be scarce.

@Orson_Kart Storage space is also a good point, though -- I admit this apartment has a very nice pantry area... nothing wrong with having plenty of food though

True - stocking up is good if you have the budget for it. I think I was simply overspending on quantity, buying mass amounts of items (that I usually already had)....

True that - good point - in most cases the cheaper store brand of an item is as good, sometimes better than the big name brand. Except with soy sauce

I hope it helps your daughter out a bit too! :-) I know, I have a friend who doesn't seem to believe me when I say that not using the cards is as important as making your payment....

These are really good ideas Sometimes it seems almost impossible to cut down but if you go through your expenses carefully there is usually some way in which you can save. I also like the idea that you might buy something and save 50% but if you don't buy it at all you save 100%.

@FayeHazel I am sometimes tempted by the thought of how much I'd save if I bought something that is heavily reduced. It is a standing joke with us to say 'wow, if we bought 3 or 4 we'd save a fortune'.

That is a great way to look at it. I loved the X% off or 100% off if you don't buy it train of thought. I should have to use it :-)

You are doing great and those are some good tips. I like using my credit card, but only if I have the money to pay for it completely when the bill comes. I hate paying interest.

Paying only minimum payments on credit cards will make a person stay in debt for ever. for sure. You made the right decisions here.

Oh - that's true too. Important to pay over minimum even by a little bit. But not so big of payments that you short yourself and go back to using them.

These are good tips - the best thing I do is to have my credit card paid off by direct debit every month. It's a cashback card too, so they are paying ME while they lend me money.

I have also realised I don't have to rush out to buy something that is on special, when I already have it. Because every few weeks they put new specials out, so I could buy it then. I also rarely buy fast food. Some great tips you have given. :)

That is a great point --previously I too, felt like if it was on sale I should hurry out and go buy 20 of them.... but you're right, usually the same items end up on sale periodically - over and over again....

Those are good ways to bring your spending under control. I had been doing well...but with buying a house and moving as well as my dad being in hospital things are a little chat right now. By spring everything will be resolved and life will move along smoothly again (I can only hope).

That's great! I guess I could cut soda, but I don't want to. I'm too addicted to Coca Cola. Seriously though, that is wonderful. I have started getting things like foil or dish soap from the Dollar Tree. Incidentally, I wrote fish soap and it changed to fish soap.

Thanks for these excellent tips. I did overpayments on my mortgage and it worked for me. I paid off more that they required to and became mortgage free. My electric and gas supply went up every year and it would have been £56.00 a month. I found a different provider for around £42.00 a month. I cancelled Sky television and that saves £25.50 a month. It used to be £24.00 a month yet Sky wanted to put the price up again. I compare supermarket prices before I go food shopping.

Thanks for these tips, they will come in very useful. Last week I had a car accident and have had to foot a hefty bill of £1500 to fix car as well as neighbours property. Any tips I've picked up I very much appreciate.

Great tips, thank you! I am struggling with television, Internet, home-phone package deal. It's really expensive, trying to keep all three services connected, for a good price.
