If there is one musician whose songs I never get tired of listening to that is Sir Elton John. Elton John’s Greatest Hits album was released on November 30, 1974 and wound up on the Billboard 200 Pop Album Chart where it stayed for a whole ten weeks. The album went on to sell over 24 million copies all over the globe.
Reginald Dwight better known as Elton John came into this world in the suburbs of London, England. If fate had not meant for him to become a popular rock singer then his future might have been a lot different. His father was hoping for him to follow in his footsteps and join the British military. It was his mom who turned things around. She was a great fan of Elvis Presley and it was the records that she played which sparked John’s interest in rock and roll.
He began touring with a band called Bluesology in his teens and later on got a job in songwriting for DJM Records in 1967. It was at this job that he was paired with Bernie Taupin. In 1969 he took the stage name of Elton John and with Taupin began writing commercial ballads. His debut album Empty Sky came out in 1969 and didn’t really spark much interest in the U.K. Then came his second album Elton John in 1970 which brought to the public the hit single “Your Song” which made it on the Top-20 both in the U.K. and in the U.S.
During the next four years Elton John came out with six full-length studio albums. These albums scored 14 U.S. Top-40 hits. Ten if these were included on his greatest hits album. He went on to create a most spectacular career and made fans all over the world. He continues to rock at the young age of 70. What I like best and what sparks my creativity is that he was born in my birthday month of March. I have included here one of my favorites from him “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” because when this hit came out in 1976 I was always in need of some saving in my turbulent young life.
How many Elton John fans out there?

Elton was my teenybopper idol, 43 years ago. Dang, how’d he get so old?

Whenever I hear "70's rock and roll" as a subject, he's one of the first that I think of.

My dad used to like listening to his songs in the car. That's actually how I started knowing his songs.
