Blizzard Blows Woman From Balcony

I've just read an article on the internet news page which makes me glad to live in Central Europe. It so happened on the Island of Sakhalin which is located in the far east of Russia (opposite Japan so-to-speak) that a 70-year-old woman felt the urge to smoke outside on her fourth-floor balcony. The blizzard she encountered was so strong that it blew her off it. Did she die? No, she didn't. Snow can mean death but it can also be a life-saver. The heaps in front of the building were so high that she landed softly. Nevertheless, she had to be taken to hospital to see if she had got inner injuries. Before that could happen, however, she had to be pulled out of the snow heap. The ambulance couldn't get near enough so a wheel-mounted front-end loader was ordered to get her out. That wasn't the only accident that happened during the blizzard. Sixty cars and one bus with 30 passengers got stuck in the snow and had to be liberated, too. Skiers, snow-boarders, bobsledders and other snow aficionados love snow. I did, too, when I was a child and went tobogganing. Not anymore. Now I can do without it. --- Photo: google

I wonder if this incident will urge her to quit smoking @MALUSE ? Probably not but next time maybe she'll tie a bungee cord to her waist belt. I went through so many blizzards when I lived in Nebraska. I hated them then and I would hate them even more now. It's coldern' a woolly-booger outside today; plus it's raining too. But I guess that's better than snow.

What's a 'woolly-booger', please? Don't use Texas slang on me. I'm a foreigner!! :-)

@nanette64 I like the idea of an old woman smoking on a balcony with a bungee cord tied to her waist belt. Heehee.

@MALUSE That's a visual for sure. Or a Youtube moment.

Well, this proves that smoking is dangerous. I do not like snow and very cold weather, I have never understood the pleasure to go skiing.

Me too. :) I find snow worlds so weird. A world without sun is very difficult for me to understand.

@vandana7 But there is sun after the snow and it is beautiful to see the snow under the sun.

The slow landing was snow landing. I wonder if it is soft.

@vandana7 When it's snowing, it is soft. Imagine rolling in it! Children love it. As you've never done it, you'd love it, too.

When the snow is fresh, it is soft. After some time, it becomes hard. The worst scenario is when it melts during the day and then freezes during the night. Then it's like ice and slippery.

This was a true story? Wow! Wouldn't think a blizzard can blow a person off a balcony, especially since a person is blocked on all sides. I am a winter baby and love snow!!!!!!!!!!

@lovebuglena I guess so. There can't be so many 70-year-old women being blown off a balcony! :-)

It was a story from a news agency. A balcony is *not* blocked on all sides. At least I've never seen one that was. I don't know what kind of balcony it was. But if it looked like the one in the photo, you could easily be blown off it, especially when it was on the fourth floor.

Good thing they got her out - if she was left there too long she would suffer from frostbite or worse. During a hurricane we know that it is a must to remain behind closed doors.

It’s so disheartening to read news like these. Thankfully she survived because of snow. I hope everyone stay safe in places with such extreme climatic conditions.

She's saved by the heaps of snow. But I wonder how long did it take to be able to get her out of the heap of snow. I hope she didn't freeze while waiting for rescue.

As is so often the case! Maybe it can help you in a predicament to think of the story you're going to tell later. :-)

That is some story. Meanwhile, here in Latvia, we have a situation like in early spring with green grass and a cold rain falling.

I loved the snow until I had a knee replacement and my doctor said no more skiing. Thanks for the laugh, and I love the idea that a smoke started it all. It amazes me what some will put up with to have a smoke. Thankfully i quit long ago. We see masses of snow caused car problems but never large machines to find people in the snow.

Snow is great as long as you don't have to go anywhere! That's why it's so much fun for children - they don't have to drive to work. Now I no longer have to do so either I am finding it much more fun! My parents still went sledging/tobogganing in their 70s!

Well, sad to hear in the beginning but great and heroic endings. Thank to everyone who rescued her! It is for sure not good thing to be out in such drastic climatic conditions but sometime we have to for several unquestioned conditions. And we happen to be in such trouble. Hope she is all right now and is doing better. Good luck to everyone in every circumstances. May God bless you all! Thank you very much!

I can do without it also, but is so freezing with snow in the North right now. That's amazing she lived, especially being at her age.

You're right. Such a fall - snow heaps or not - can't be a pleasure when you're 70 years old.
