~His Eye Exam!~

Good morning everyone. I hope you slept well and you are doing well today. =)
Yesterday my son Jackson had an eye doctor appointment. It was the first time he had ever been and his nerves were a mess. New experiences for Jackson are a huge deal. We prayed a lot for him at the appointment.
He did amazing! The eye doctor put eye drops in to dilate his eyes and he was so good about it. I was shocked and so proud of him. His eye exam was revealing, and not in such a good way.
Jackson has amblyopia. So, he can see amazing out of his left eye but his right eye struggles to see much of anything. His left eye was 20/25 and his right eye was 20/100!
So, he needs glasses and if his right eye doesn't gain strength he will need to wear an eye patch starting in a couple of weeks.
I asked the doctor-how could I have not known? He said some kids won't tell their parents they can't see well because they do not want glasses. I then said, well I get that but why have no other doctors ever referred us to an eye doctor for him?
That one had him puzzled as well. He said it should have been caught WAY before now by doing the simple eye chart.
That's how the appointment went for anyone wondering about it...
God is our healer though so I know his eyes will improve! =)

At least you know about his eyes now and can deal with it.

@jstory07 Oh, that's sad. Yeah the eye doctor told him it could take a week for him to get comfortable in them.

@LovingMyBabies Good. Give him time to adjust to them. I have had glasses since I was nine months old. My Mom said I cried when she put them on and cried when she took them off. My poor Mom.

My baby brother had a lazy eye also, and it wasn't detected until he reached school and the teacher thought that he struggled to see from certain angles without turning himself. When we look back at photos of him we can see that 1 eye looks different. But who would know otherwise? I hope that they can fix Jackson up and that this was caught in time. My brother is classified as legally blind in that eye, but it hasn't stopped him from leading a normal life, and besides the immediate family, nobody else even knows.

@Juliaacv Jackson is 10 though-it should have been caught at physicals through out his life.
Oh well, at least we know now and we can get it treated-either by glasses and a patch or God can heal him.

@LovingMyBabies Exactly, my brother did the patch but for what-ever reason his was too far gone or something, but they were not able to make that bad eye work properly. I wouldn't give up on Jackson, we are all different.
It makes us realize the importance of our senses. After my brain tumor was removed I lost a lot of my peripheral vision on 1 side. I really notice it when we are in a crowd and I am unsure of my surroundings and when I am driving. But I still have my eyesight. Its just a work around for me.

So glad he got diagnosed finally and can get some corrections done. I would not use the docs who failed to diagnose the problem.

My niece Amyra has to wear a patch several hours per day. It's got a cartoon on it, and she thinks it's cool. You know, a lot of parents came up to my sister when Amyra was two and already wearing glasses. They asked how she knew Amyra was having vision problems, and my sister told them it was just because she was premature. You would know, when you're premature they do checkup after checkup, and that's why they knew to take action. And that patch HAS improved her vision. So hopefully, it will for your little guy too.
My mom didn't know I needed glasses until I was seven. I knew, but didn't want to wear glasses so I never mentioned it.
That is weird that no others recommended seeing an eye doctor.

@AmbiePam Hopefully Jackson will be okay with it but he doesn't have a choice either way. He's 10 though, the eye doctor said he's a little older than he usually recommends for this treatment but we are praying it's not too late.
We have an awesome God though so I know he will be healed. =)

Actually, that's not that bad. My daughter's is 20/500 in one eye. He'll notice a big difference once he has his glasses. Will open up a whole new world for him.

@irishidid I know there is much worse, of course but the eye doctor said it's not good by far. Yes, he will be able to see correctly which will be amazing for him!

Kids are still exploring and may not realize they have an issue that can be changed.

@LovingMyBabies My niece was only 2 years old, it did not take very long, may be it will take a little longer for Jackson because he is older.

I had to wear an eye patch for 6 weeks when I was at the University of Florida, due to an eye injury I had at the time. In addition to the eye patch, I wore a bandana and acted like a pirate the whole time. It was quite comical. I just made the best of a bad situation!

@moffittjc Making the best of a situation is a great way of showing God we are grateful for all-even in tough times. =)

@LovingMyBabies I always try to see the best in bad situations, even when things look their worst. It's not always easy, but at least I try. I am always grateful for what God has given me in life, no matter what. I'm not perfect, I do sometimes get bummed out, or angry, or sad, but I usually pull through and get back on track by putting everything in perspective.

well I am sure he has been using his left eye to compensate. I hope the glasses work. My mother used to have one nearsighted eye and one farsighted eye..so she didn't wear glasses until she was older because she always used her far sighted eye to compensate for the other.

Wow, I hope everything works out for your son. Really. I had eye problems ever since I was six years old. I have been wearing glasses since then as well. And I also have what they call Kerititus. Nothing bad, although there are two versions of that. One is bad and one is annoying. I have the annoying one. I have also had silver nitrate treatments done about 4 times in 25 years. Not pleasant. Again, hope things work out and your sons eye gets stronger. Deep down I have a feeling it will.
