Feeling Foolish

I tripped and fell on some uneven pavement while I was out for a walk the other day, and my first thought was "I hope nobody saw that". No such luck, a man and woman seemed to materialize out of nowhere and were very concerned. The man helped me up, and after thanking them I couldn't wait to get away and go home. I was so embarrassed and felt really foolish. Before you ask - I'm fine, thanks. I have a grazed knees and hands, but they will clear up in a few days. Do you feel foolish if you trip?

It's understandable. My father told me one day how he fell while coming back from work. He had some bruises. I have sympathy for you old ones.

My head knows that it's nothing to be ashamed of, but my gut feeling is embarrassment. I'm old too

@jabouk It is extraordinarily embarrassing. I did it last year, went flat on my face and bounced straight up in complete denial that it ever happened. Later I discovered that my trousers were stuck to my bleeding knees and one thumb was so swollen that the skin was stretched tight over it and all the wrinkles were stretched out of it and it looked much younger than my other thumb. I should really have had it x-rayed but that would have meant an awful lot of fuss.My wife fell in a hotel last Sunday night, just hours before we were to get on the plane for Budapest. She hurt her foot very badly but soldiered on and hobbled very slowly around Budapest for three days in the snow. Now that we are home she's going to get it looked at.

That's it - complete denial is the reaction! As @amadeo says, it's nothing to be ashamed of, and yet that's what we feel. Your fall sounds a lot worse than mine, though as I was only 5 minutes from home my trousers didn't have time to get stuck to my knees. Sorry to hear about your wife, I hope it's nothing serious.

@jaboUK Thanks. My daughter also fell on our way to the airport. I stayed vertical the whole time!!! I also fell when I tried to stifle a very violent sneeze while walking in town. The sneeze came out anyway sounding loud and very unnatural and one of my legs uncontrollably kicked up in the air and I felt so stupid.

Oh my, yes. I have done that far too many times. I remember tripping and falling down the stairs in high school. That's a really bad time to look foolish. I'm glad you are okay!

@jaboUK About six little kids, one adult, and a cute guy in my class. At least the adult and cutie didn't laugh. But back then, the cutie mattered!

I'm always embarrassed when I fall (thankfully not recently). There was a time when my two co-workers and I were leaving work and I slipped and fell in the snow. I couldn't get up and was just spread on the ground. Both were laughing so hard they couldn't help me up. Eventually with their help I got back up but all these years later they still laugh about my falling. Even thinking about it now makes me giggle

That's good that you can get a laugh remembering that, even if you were embarrassed at the time. I don't think it's so bad if you are with friends, but in front of strangers is a lot worse.

Oh dear poor you glad it was not more serious. One of the wards I cover is an orthopaedic ward and there are always ladies in with fractured femurs etc. Poor things especially if they have dementia they are not even aware they have broken anything. They know something is not right but not what. I regularly fall over and yes with an audience present and we laugh it off but sometimes it blooming well hurts, My last big fall was in Italy in Herculaneum. What a complete and utter fool. I man nearly tripped I saved him from falling but went flying so it was me who ended up on the floor,.How embarrassing! .

I've come off my horse once or twice in the middle of a 1,000 acre paddock and immediately looked round to see if anyone saw me!

@jaboUK I am recovered, but I think it led to the torn rotator cuff in my shoulder that I had surgery for in October. Glad you didn't get hurt too bad when you fell.

I had a very similar experience about 5 years ago in a very busy street in Bangkok, not my home country. I was walking and talking on the phone to my friend who was teaching me where to go exactly. Then I tripped and fell on my knees. Bruised ego hurt more than the graze on my knee lol! Nobody helped me up though so I just got up and walked again as if nothing happened. if it happened here in my country, I'm pretty sure strangers would gladly help me up. That's why I don't really like Thai people. They're rude to strangers.

@jaboUK They were kind to farang (white people), but never to their fellow asians. They don't say sorry or excuse me when they step on your foot or bump into you. I stayed there for 6 months. My French friend who owns a company there and have stayed there for more than 10 years have the same observation as I do.

That's odd that you should think that about Thai people, I've always found them very kind. Sorry you had a bad experience with them, and you're right you do get your ego bruised when you fall.

First of all I hope you aren't feeling any ill effects today! Secondly, I have fell over a number of times while out walking the dog in the hills. My immediate reaction is to jump up and try to make it look like I intended falling in the first place. Of course this never works so I have to settle for hoping that nobody saw me!!!

Lol - my days of 'jumping up' are long over! Getting up after a fall can be a bit of a problem now.. Anyway, I'm fine thank you, though I have a nice scab on my knee. Good job I was wearing trousers or it would have been a lot worse.

@jaboUK Someone was driving by and saw me fall. They were kind enough to stop and offer help. I was so embarrassed that I said that I was just fine, hopped on my bicycle, and headed home with blood dripping down my leg. Lol! A neighbor and my husband flushed out the embedded sand and treated my knee.
