RANT: A CRANKY Student Made Me in HELL!!!

There are so many ways to deal with our stressors. I do think it is normal to rant sometimes. That’s what makes myLot a good outlet to burst it out the inner sentiments. To cut it short, it is not a secret for some fellow mylotters that I teach the English language online. I enjoyed teaching online students from kid’s to adult’s level. Moreover, I humbly say that it is what I am good at.
In fact, it wasn’t a perfect job for some people. I personally think that they are right. The question is a big WHY? Some online students are so arrogant and rude. For example, I had a student this morning and tried to build a good rapport with her. OMG! She is a cranky adult student. It was like she wanted to swallow me alive. In short, she was trying to insinuate her professional status. That is, she is a consultant. Personally speaking, I don’t care about such since it wasn’t my goal to be informed. It is plainly to enhance her English skills.

I agree. She was so arrogant and cannot able express herself that much in English. In fact, she is measuring me up, too. I don't need to brag my work experiences. However, she needs to stop asking so many personal questions. I was really in hell for two consecutive classes with her.

are you saying she wants to direct the session, as in, she leads, you follow?

although patience should be a virtue, there are times that we lose that trait. it is all right to burst out our emotions, it is even an avenue for that person to know that we are human after all, and we cannot and should not tolerate the attitude like arrogance.

@Shavkat i believe teachers should be patient but to the most tolerable degree, because we can also shout at the top of our voices and hope there is no physical action whatsoever.

@ridingbet I can do that, too. I can shout if things are not acceptable.

It is really fun to teach online. There are also ups and downs. Actually, I am one of the flexible teachers in the company. I can teach all types of students. With this particular student, it is an isolated case. But then, I still need to deal with them.

I think she's just arrogant and it's not humble enough to LEARN more.
That's definitely a troublesome student, it's probably easy to teach the youth.

I have been a teacher's assistant before, so I did get to teach some people. And really, when people try to show off this status, it just means they are insecure of something else. Or she could have just been having a bad day. You never know what is going on on the other side of the screen or in their minds.

I personally think she is so insecure, my friend. During the class, she is trying to measure me up. I told her my work experiences and even work in her country. But then, I don't mind if she grumbled during the class. I don't need to lose my cool over such behavior. On the other hand, she might have personal issues that made her so frustrated.

@Shavkat Yeah that does sound like insecurities. Poor thing. It isn't easy, but it is better to handle things calmly.

Yes, many times you have to expect the unexpected!! Teaching English abroad sounds fun and all but we have to be prepared to deal with such things, which they should prepare us for!!! What I would say is, that's good u r a professional!!! Use a little reverse psychology, she's the customer, she's the greatest thing since sliced bread!!!!

You have a point, my friend. I did keep my coolness during the class. I never tried to entertain much of her crankiness. I managed to divert her attention to the lesson. Eventually, she stopped grumbling. However, you can still see her making face and the like.

Rude people is always such an awful thing, we deserve to be treated with respect. I'm afraid not always we can do something about that. The important thing for us is to keep being the way we are, sometimes a luck is needed indeed.

@saritflor I do agree with you. If I encounter such students, I just ignore its bad behavior. It is definitely a waste of energy.

@Shavkat And I add something important we must know to save our energies also with these kind of rude people. Have a nice day.

She perhaps just wanted to show you that she also has a title. That's only my thought. I maybe wrong, my friend.

She did with rudeness. I don't think there is nothing wrong to brag it. However, it should be in a professional way. If I am going to entertain her rudeness, I can be rude, too. My educational background is far better than her. If I am going to brag it, she will be barking to a wrong person. But then, I am still a professional person and I don't need to be evil just because of her unacceptable act.

It was not right for that student to show some attitude. Yes she does pay for what she signed up for but it does not mean she all have the rights in the world to act like that.

I do agree with you. I also emphasized that to her. If she continued to be in such behavior, I still have the option to drop the call and not to continue the class. It is so degrading in my part if she continues to scrutinize me. It is not worth to have her payment. I am also professional with pride.

I really like this discussion, Shavkat, thanks for sharing your experience. Ranting is something we all do, it allows you to blow off steam and continue working calmly... I admire your courage, I'm guessing she's not the first nor the last cranky person you've had to deal with!
