I should have taken my own picture before I ate it

One of the adults in the home made me a lovely spinach and cheese omelet for breakfast this morning, which I had with coffee and a slice of seeded toast. Of course while typing out the above sentence, I wondered which spelling of omelet was actually correct... omelet? Omelette? One is American English, the other is British English/French. I see both in common use, although I suspect that the way I spelled it is "lower". In any case, my breakfast was lovely despite my confusion on how to spell it. How do you spell it? What did you eat this morning? Photo from the Cooking Channel website.

I usually go with omelet - and it is rare to have food that tastes and looks good :-)

Omelette is how I would spell it. Your picture looks appetizing. Is appetizing spelt with an s or z

@spiderdust And so it goes - always a tussle between the Americans and the British (lol) The British left their stamp for us to follow here in India

@allknowing Strangely, there are a few words that I spell in the British way -- like "grey" and "theatre" and "cancelled" -- and it's probably due to all my years as a British literature student.

In the United States, it's spelled with a Z.

At least now I'll know both ways are correct, so I'll stress less over misspelling it.

@DianneN It's funny how I have family members who won't eat quiche, but they'll eat frittata... the only difference really is the crust!

I always forget about them as a dinner option, although I do make frittatas. I guess that's similar to an open-faced omelet.

That was a lovely breakfast. Yesterday I had an omelet with tomatoes, bell pepper, onion and cucumber.

Technically both are correct, the spellings are just from different cultures.

Any way you spell it, an omelet or omelette is the same, isn't it? To me, spinach is great with almost anything!

They are the same, although I don't think you'd ever see "French omelet".

It's interesting how there's so many variations of spelling the same word within one language.

Omelette is how I've always spelled it, for some reason. We love them! Both spellings are correct. This morning I had a toasted English Muffin/honey, string cheese, and 1/2 banana, with coffee. It was delicious:)

I know I've spelled it both ways at different points, although I probably think of "omelette" as a fancier dish.

Since writing this post, I've noticed that I go back and forth between the spellings depending on how fancy the omelet/omelette.

i think any spelling of omelet is right, and we do pronounce it as omelet, as spelled, right? and suddenly, i recall a nurse who joined the staff in the hospital where i was the head nurse--she pronounced the omelet as OMELEY. i think that is wrong.

It sounds like she saw the spelling and pronounced it like the word chalet. You're right, it should be pronounced like "om-let", not "om-lay".

@teamfreak16 Sounds like my favorite pizza! Actually, a lot of pizza toppings work well as omelet fillings.

Spinach and cheese omelet is a really good food. I didn't know this until my boyfriend cooked it to me. Now it is one of my favourites.
