What would you name your boat if you had one?

While we were in the town of Denmark in Western Australia, we took the chance to go on a river cruise. We caught the boat at our caravan park then puttered gently up the river for a short distance before turning around and coming back. On the way a local hotel brought fish and chips down to a landing for our dinner. We then went out into the inlet to watch the sunset before being returned to our starting point. We were intrigued with the name of this boat. If you slur the words and say them quickly, it is a very rude phrase consisting of the ‘f’ word and ‘off’. So the boat’s name is ‘f*ck off’. Boat-owners come up with some amazing names for their vessels. Our friends named their boat ‘Miss Tress’, in other words ‘Mistress’. And I wonder why boats are always feminine. If I ever get a boat I might call it Roger. What would you call a boat if you had one? Or perhaps you have one already.

There are several theories about boats and female names. One is that in the languages around the Mediterranean sea the word for “ship” is feminine This is the reason why the name must be feminine. I would call my ship "Lucky Duck".

Lucky Duck - a great name for a boat. I don't think Lucky Duck would be a very big boat.

@JudyEv @LadyDuck Boats are feminine in other languages, too. In English and in German, a boat or a ship is always referred to as 'she'. I had a paddle boat which was called 'Spezi' (pronounced 'Shpatsee). It means 'friend' or 'buddy' in a Southern German dialect.

The "word" boat is feminine in most countries, but not all, in Spanish, it's often is male (el barco or el buque), same in French (le bateau), in Italy we have the usual mix the boat is feminine (la barca), but il battello for a bigger one.

@JudyEv Some of them are funny to see - but awkward if you're at sea and have to call the coastguard.

We has a small boat many years ago and when I was a kid we used to go to the Norfolk broads every year on holiday. I much prefer cruise ships that take you to lovely places. I am unlikely to ever own a boat but would probably name it after my daughter!

I think many boats are named after daughters or wives. We'll never have one either so I won't have to worry about whether I really want Roger or not as a name.

At work I type of the boat registry for the local yatch club every year. There are some pretty good names but I can not think of them all right now. I know there is somebody with the last name Maxwell and their boat is Maxwell House. There is Nauti Girl, Dark and Stormy, Dejabringabeeralong, and Aqua-holic just to name a few.

I have no boat and probably never will but if I had one I would give her a flower name like Rose or Daisy. Just one of my whims. You might find this interesting about why boats are referred to as shes.
Do ships have a gender? And if so, why?

Thanks for the link. So gender bias as regards ships is now going out the window. I'm not sure I like Rose or Daisy but whatever floats your boat i guess.

Years ago, I had a boat named The Job Site. Whenever any of the guys wanted to go out on the boat, they would all tell their wives and girlfriends that they were going to the job site for a few hours. The ladies thought the guys were working! haha

Good question. I've had to give names to ships in my novels, but never thought about what I would name one of my boats, if I had one. I'd have to give this one some thought. People do come up with strange names for their boats. I think they're called feminine names because women are so temperamental, just like the elements they bounce around with on the rivers, lakes, and oceans.

@JudyEv That's probably true since I believe they need to be registered. My neighbor's boat had all kinds of official stickers on it. He didn't have a name for it though.

@just4him Yes, boats have to be registered in Australia but some just have numbers and/or letters as RFB123 which might stand for Recreational Fishing Boat 123. I'm not sure that is quite correct but it is something like this.

Naming your own boat isn't something you'd want to jump into without giving it some thought. I have an idea that you're not supposed to change the name of a boat but I haven't got to research it at the minute.
