A study in concentration

I thought I’d share this photo before we leave for our short break. We have two sons and they both learnt violin by the Suzuki method from when they were about three years old. We were living in Esperance on the coast and were lucky enough to have a teacher there. However we then moved to Ravensthorpe and the two-hour car trip every week became too difficult so we stopped the lessons. The photo is of our younger son who is now a professional jazz bass player. He lives in Ireland. We have kept his tiny 1/8th size violin as it is just so cute. I love the concentration on his face. Have your children carried on to have a career connected to something they did in childhood?

One of our sons was a wrestler in high school he worked for about 10 years as a wrestling coach so I guess that qualifies. None of my children is musical even though I was and I encouraged them to try an instrument. They take after their father and liked sports.

He was so cute. One of my sons was in a school band but soon as he was out of school that was the end of it. But he was also into art and is now a professional animator

I think a lot give up the music once they leave school. I'm sure your son enjoys his work.

My children are both still teenagers, so they are still trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives. But I hope they follow their passions and dreams in no matter what they decide to do in life!

@JudyEv Unfortunately, there are millions of people around the world who are stuck in jobs that they hate, but still go to every day because they desperately need the money. This world would probably be a much better place if each and every person could follow their dreams and passions and work in a job they love!

@moffittjc I'm sure it would be. Didn't someone once say 'most people live lives of quiet desperation'?

I think it would be awful to be stuck in a job that you didn't enjoy. I hope your children are able to find a career that they love.

@JudyEv Applying themselves to exams - ok for the older girl, impossible for the older boy... Both are equally capable. Ah well, I guess you can lead a horse to water...

@pgntwo A 'D' here was a pass; and 'F' was a fail. Our eldest saw no reasons to 'As, Bs or Cs' when a D would suffice. It wasn't until he'd left school and eventually took himself back to TAFE (technical college) that he applied himself and got the highest marks in the state for his subject. So I guess sometimes you have to butt out and let them find out the hard way.

Very nice picture of him. The only child to learn an instrument was my younger son, and he gave it up long ago, especially when someone stole his saxophone.

I never had a talent for playing musical instruments. But, we are planning to let our little girl learn to play ukelele and singing lessons. She seems to like it and hoping that it could be her talents in the future. Your son looks great in that picture.
