Good afternoon.I have never read the bible.
Should I.What do I get out of this?
I am Catholic and received my first communion
Struggle through this.I was not meant to be.
Sure I know some prayers but that is about it.
Does it make me feel good reading the bible.
Will I understand what I am reading/
Does this make me a selfish person?

my own readings of it fuel my scepticism but it is a very interesting book to study, but it can challenge your beliefs hard whatever your current position on religion

There are long and short books to read. The Book of Matthew is fairly long as it has 28 chapters and the following is some of chapter 5 (a bluedoll version)
Jesus saw the people and went up a hill, where he sat down. His disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them about true happiness
He told them this,
Happy are those who know they have spiritually needs;
a special place belongs to them!
Happy are those who mourn;
for God will be of comfort for them!
Happy are those who are humble;
they will receive what God has always promised love
Happy are those whose greatest desire is to do what might be pleasing to God;
as God will satisfy them fully!
Happy are those who are merciful to others;
for God will be merciful to them!
Happy are the pure in heart;
they will learn about God!
Happy are those who work for peace;
God will call on them his children!
Happy are those who are persecuted because they want to do what is good;
a special place belongs to them!
So after listening to Jesus speak, how do you feel?

I have never sat down and read the bible, as in finish this book only. I have read most of it at different points of my life. As in one book at a time.
Its hard to understand, my grandfather was a preacher but my dad said he did not understand the bible when he tried to read it. However, when I read it the "thy, thee and thou" I do understand.
But each person who reads the bible can take each verse differently, where I understand it meaning one thing you get something totally different.
I need to get the "today" English bible @LoriAMoore refers to.
But If you want to read it my advice is to pick one book from the bible and just read it.

I learned to read the bible between the lines. The lines themselves are very confusing, but the message between them is enlightening. :-)

You will only get answers to your questions if you read it.
It is my favorite book and I try to read a bit every day.

If you want to go to heaven you should. If heaven is created by man, then I want nothing to do with it, but that is just me.

@amadeo According to some but you might want to believe what it says also. Anybody who does not is supposedly going to hell according to some. No matter how good you were in your life.

I am thinking about reading it myself to finally see for myself what is in it. I had Bible with me which was given to me by my school when I was a kid but I don't know where it is. lol So, probably have to buy it or something. No harm in reading it.

I used to be religious when I was younger and I'm not anymore but I'd still say the bible is worth reading. I think parts of it are like a spiritual help manual whilst other parts are very educational in terms of the historical material and in understanding how mankind has evolved. I would say that some of it is boring and so far removed from anything we know in this day and age that it is difficult to interpret. Some of it is beautiful and poetic and entertaining. Some of it is quite disgusting. As a woman reader I find it difficult to cope with some of the content as it describes women being oppressed in a patriarchal society. I should say that I'm talking about the Old Testament here. I enjoy reading Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes and Isaiah.

@amadeo The old testament is more complete. I actually think older prints or copies are more fulfilling to read as the language has been slightly changed in some copies but feels more authentic in older copies. I have my grandmothers old bible which I like to read.

Kind of. Only so that you can understand ... something ... something about 'owning something you don't deserve, something you share with everyone, something that everyone is free to take without your permission (although it's something you give everyone permission to take; because it's available in unlimited quantity)---call it Amazing Grace, call it Pardon, call it Redemption, call it The Water of Life ...

If you read it from a purely historical and cultural perspective, it's an interesting read.

Who am I to judge? I did read the Bible and it is really helpful for me. I think it depends on every person. And for me, as long as you are doing good to others.
