Would you eat something 50 years out of date?

I remember reading an article about a man who ate a tin of chicken which was 50 years old to celebrate his golden wedding anniversary .. and he was ok! I was looking in the fridge this morning and thinking how much I waste over a week. Quite a bit of my food is going out of date and I know it won't all get eaten in time. However, some products I will eat when they are slightly out like yoghurt or fruit because I know from experience they will not hurt me. I don't let my granddaughter eat anything that is out particularly if it is "Use by" although if a product is "best before" it is usually ok if it smells and looks good. I certainly wouldn't eat anything which is 50 years old for fear of being poisoned. Here is the article:

Yogurt is fine even several days after expiration day. I would not eat meat (or chicken) if the smell is not good. Canned food can give serious problems.

@LadyDuck I suppose it must have smelt and looked alright but I notice there is no mention of the wife eating it in the article.

I have no problem with fruits (my eyes are good enough to see if a fruit is rotten without needing an expiry date), yogurts (we learned a few years ago that the producers were putting 2 weeks more of expiry date on yogurts destined to French Antilles, due to the travel), and since a few years, eggs : I drop them in a bowl of water, if they sink they are still good to eat.

@akalinus There is not a date on each egg in the US ? I know that they are not processed the same way than in the EU. There is here an interdiction to wash an egg before selling it (the advantage is that they have not to be stocked in a fridge), and they have all a date of laying.

I am careful of eating foods. I watch out their expiration dates. Better be safe than sorry, is my motto with foods.

I've never had food poisoning but I did eat some coleslaw accidentally once that was 2 weeks out of date. I thought it tasted a bit strange but I wasn't ill.

Oh, gag. That's awful. There are so many potential issues with canned food that old. I can't imagine saving something for that long and then actually eating it. We helped clean out an elderly lady's estate at some point and there were cans on her shelves that had been there for 20 years or more. They were all partially corroded. It was really sad to see.

@sprite1950 Rationing caused a lot of issues back then. I don't think any of us born in more recent generations are really able to appreciate just how tough it was.

@aureliah Well I suppose if it was in a tin and the air didn't get to it it didn't deteriorate. I wouldn't have even given it to my dogs!

Eating something too old, that also non-veg, I don't prefer to eat.Fruits and veggies may not hurt if it is little bit old. I don't know how the person kept the chicken for so long. Your article link is not properly uploaded, it seems. Please check it out.

I don't want to eat anything when the label says it's expired. But when it comes to century eggs I could eat that because the older it is, the more delicious is the egg.

@sprite1950 Century eggs are called that way coz they're preserved for centuries. I've never eaten an out of date eggs before.

Not too long ago, about 2014, I got a jar of peanut butter and jelly combined. It tasted kind of stale so I looked at the expiration date. It was 1978. How do they get away with that?

@sprite1950 we sometimes eat those canned goods that are expired 2-3 months back, and the tin can does not show signs of botulism like the top or bottom lids are popping out. the foods should be oxygen- and air-free because there can be anaerobic bacilli growing inside.

I live by, if it is not pink or green or smells, or is chunky or sour, well then it must be okay to eat. Of course I won't do that if I am serving anything to anyone. I will always check the dates, but for myself, waste not want not, I don't like wasting.

@DesirousDreamer Oh yes salmonella poisoning can come from rice. I never keep any unused rice, I always throw it away.

Definitely no to a 50 year old chicken. I hate wasting food. And am always disappointed when something starts to get old.

I check expiry dates before buying. When I was in Melbourne on tour I almost bough giant sized Toblerone bars which I later found, just as I was paying for them that they were time barred. They were heavily discounted. But I am told there is no harm in eating time barred chocolates.

I think chocolate is harmless although it doesn't taste as good if it's out of date and can sometimes go white.

If it was properly tinned I believe it was in eatable condition. Often, outside agents spoil the food.
