Marmite is a thick sticky yeast product manufactured in the UK since 1902 and turns out 6,000 tons a year. It has a strong acrid taste which people either love or hate and which has earned it the slogan "Love it or hate it".
There are similar products sold in other countries, Australia has Vegemite, the Swiss Cenovis and Germany Vitam-R and I can't imagine not having a pot in the cupboard.
There are some very amusing ads about for Marmite my favourite being the one below.
A girl brings a Date back to her apartment the girl offers him coffee and goes into the kitchen, when she comes back they kiss and the guy starts gagging. Th...

I think Vegemite is sold as a separate product over here but I don't know how different it is in flavour. It is still a yeast extract product.

@sprite1950 That's true. I've had them both and the flavour is slightly different. I prefer Vegemite but maybe only because I'm more used to it.

@sprite1950 I know England loves its Marmite. There are a few places now though where you can buy Vegemite. In Ireland it's available in health food shops although it's so full of salt it's not funny.

I love Marmite but then my DNA predisposes me to like salty things rather than sweet, apparently. The others you mention are not 'Marmite sold under a different name'- they are quite different products. Even the own-brand Yeast Extracts sold by the major supermarkets are not quite the same as the real thing.
Apparently, mosquitoes, midges, clegs and other biting insects hate the smell of it. You don't have to go smearing it all over your body, either - just one piece of toast and marnite at breakfast time is said to be enough to protect you from bites all day. I don't have any personal positive experience of this (my DNA may have something to do with this again, since I'm not one of those people who attracts a lot of blood-sucking insects), but this is what I have heard!

@sprite1950 I know someone who regularly takes a jar of Marmite on holiday when they go to sunnier climes and they assure me that it works (eating it, I mean, not just packing it!). If you go to the Hebrides in July and August, the clegs can be very voracious, too.

I edited my post because as you say they are not the same.
It's interesting to note what you say about biting insects although we don't seem to get a lot over here, probably because of our climate. I rarely get bitten, even fleas don't like me, but if we ever get another heatwave, and looking out of the window now it seems a long way off, I shall remember that and eat it every morning!

It may not be tasty but surely it could be healthy as anything fermented is considered good for health. May be one needs to acquire a taste for it.

It has a lot of health benefits which may seem surprising. In fact in WW1 it was packed as part of a soldiers ration pack and has since been used to treat malaria and malnutrition.

@toniganzon It's yeast extract and has such a strong flavour that many people think it's horrible. It seems that Manila sells it. The picture put up above by Cristy is how it is sold in our country. I wonder if it's available on Amazon.
I just looked and it's available on Amazon.co.uk but I'm not sure about other countries.

@toniganzon I've seen some very funny videos of babies eating it for the first time although surprisingly some like it.
I actually didn't think I would get any responses on this discussion but I had it on my toast this morning so thought it would be interesting to see if anyone else had tried it.

When you said marmite I thought of vegemite. I didn't know if they were the same but now I do. I only know the word because of the song “Down Under” sung by “Men at Work”. I don't know if I like it since I've never tried it. But I do like the song.

I love this song too! I think it got to No.1 in the British charts. Vegemite has a similar flavour to Marmite but is not the same product trading under a different name as I originally thought.

I have never heard or tried Marmite. However, I have heard of Vegemite but only because of the song Down Under by Men at Work. I would probably try it on a piece of toast if we had it here. I found this video of Americans doing a taste test between the two.

I love Marmite, whether on toast, bread and butter or crumpets. Some people are unfortunate enough not to be able to eat it because they are on certain types of anti-depressants.
I have tried Vegemite but it's a very different taste and not to my liking at all.
