Would it be unhealthy for me if I drink more water than my body requirement ?

A person who is a friend of my cousin alerted me about these things of drinking water. "If you are drinking too much water it can provide extra pressure on your kidneys because kidneys are meant to detoxify your body through a minimum level of water. It continuously do its process everytime we drink water. On the other hand if you give your body excessive water, sodium which is a part of our body's electrolyte system will be diluted in blood and while urinating you will loose this nutrient and further it may cause, nausea, vomiting, brain swelling and may invite death as well." Do you think these sayings are true?

Yes. You'll be hyperhydrated. Water in excess becomes a poison in your body, and cause disruption in your brain function. You would need to consume appropriate levels of electrolytes to prevent it, but you can still go beyond that. It's rare, but happens during drinking contests and sporting events where you overcompensate your water intake. You should make sure you know how much water you should drink a day. In my case, 1.1 gallons is the right amount for my body to function. However, I hardly get that.

1.1 gallon....? Why. Normal is half a gallon. 1.1 gallon should be appropriate for physical active persons. Do you have any water scarcity in your locality?

@prakashj256 It's calculated on body mass. Since I'm roughly 280 pounds, I require more water than someone half that weight. Water is plentiful here, it's just that I never get thirsty, so unless I have a jug of water next to me, I forget to drink throughout the day.

@OneOfMany No, no..you should always drink water. 280 pound is not a normal weight. Even if not thirsty Your body will require more water to digest food to convert it to energy. Drinking less water will cause problems in kidneys.

How are we to know how much each of us need?

Yes the need of water differs from person to person. If we are physically active 8-10 hours a day, then we should drink water every time whenever we have chance. If not then then we should drink whenever we are thirsty.

I think so. But I think in fact more people are lack of water rather than drinking too much of it.

@prakashj256 I do think that if we sweat a lot, we need to hydrate ourselves. Moreover, if we feel thirsty, we need to drink something. For the reason that our brain gives impulses that we need water in our body.

There is a limit our body can take in. If the stomach bursts, the person will die.

Yes. Too much water at once can cause a drop in sodium and other electrolyte levels. That can be very dangerous.

If I continue to do this then I will suffer from over hydration. I hope I will maintain my water intake, so that my inner health can take care of me.
