Personal Alarms

What do you think of personal alarms and do you carry one?
Sometimes when I am walking my dog alone in the dark I wonder what I would do if someone attacked me. I will occasionally see people I don't like the look of and wonder if I am safe so maybe a whistle or some kind of alarm would scare a person off if they had the intention to attack.
There are other ways of protecting yourself like using pepper spray in the eyes. I can imagine that would be most unpleasant but it doesn't cause permanent damage and can also be used on dangerous animals.
Have you ever had to protect yourself against an attacker or do you carry any form of protection just in case?

@Kandae11 I try not to think of being attacked but it is possible so I'm thinking I should carry something

I would be a bit worried about using a knife on someone.

@rheicel I think the biggest problem is the attack is often so quick that we don't have time to react but I know I would feel safer if I carried something. I think a spray is a good idea because it doesn't usually do permanent harm and it is quite quick to use.

@sprite1950 I don't know how to use it anyway so I just carried it for a few days. I'd rather use a ballpen than carrying it because ballpen is much faster than flipping a knife. My friend gave me that before because I was coming home so late from the office and there's an incident not far from our place that my cousin had been robbed while riding a jeepney then they shot the driver into the head the crime rate before was very terrible it's not really safe when we're on the roads especially when we came home late. Even my ex-bf gave me a paper spray that time just to protect myself but thank God I didn't have to use it because nothing bad happens to me.

One thing about India. Notwithstanding the rapes we are famous for, I can walk out in the night and around 8.30 pm and even 9 pm, and not feel insecure because there will always be crowd. But I guess it is because I am old. Yes, I used to be scared when I was young, and preferred to be home before dark which was a rare thing because I often worked well into night back then.

I feel more vulnerable now that I am older. I used to think I was invincible when I was younger so I guess it was just luck I have survived as I wasn't careful. I would walk alone in the dark all the time.

Still, be careful and always carry a makeshift weapon.

I haven't but my sister has. I think about it more now I am older. I didn't care when I was young and I guess I was lucky.

@JudyEv That's for sure. People get hit over the head with bricks or metal objects.

@sprite1950 I'm more concerned about security than I once was. There have been some very violent burglaries in this area lately and they scare me.

Yes that's a good idea and it could be used as a weapon if you were attacked.

@YrNemo Well you could take a swipe at someone with it.

If you're walking your dog I don't think many people would approach you. With your dog as your personal 'alarm' no one will want to risk getting ripped to pieces.

Haha, my dog is such a fairy. She's actually quite big but would run the other way if someone attacked! She was a rescue and seriously abused so is scared of everything. I suppose her size might put an attacker off though.

@Starmaiden I like to think she would but when I first had her she was too afraid to even venture out in the garden. She has come such a long way since then but it's been baby steps.

@sprite1950 Animals remember the pain they have suffered at the hands of humans. You might see her as a "fraidy cat', but if she thought that you, (her trusted caretaker) was in danger in any way, she would probably attack the perpetrator out of an instinct to protect you.

I rather prefer to stay away from likely danger such as walking alone in the dark or on lonely roads We keep our gate closed and deal with service providers at the gate and not let them come in.

Yes I think it's probably better to be safe than sorry. I am very wary of who I let in my house.

I've only started to think about it recently as I have become older.
