Gas struts fitted - or should that be 'fat'?

Today we fitted gas struts on the bathroom cabinet that we recently built and installed in our caravan. These struts hold the door up while you’re extracting foraging in the cupboard then hold the door firmly shut when you close it. The first struts we bought had the wrong kind of fittings but we were able to purchase the correct type online and they’ve now been installed. Another little tick on the various chores we need to finish before we head off across Australia to Melbourne.

Good that you got that done before you start your trip.Fit is also the past tense fit.But I think using fitted is correct to make sense of the sense.(remember,I am not a native English speaker).

Here is the cupboard with the doors shut. With the gas struts you can open the doors and they will stay open while you get whatever you want from the cupboard. Then when the door is shut the struts keep it shut firmly till you open it again. The top photo isn't very good because of the strong light coming in the window on the left.

@JudyEv It's those imperfections that make each project unique!

Thank you very much! Sometimes the camera hides the little imperfections which is handy.

I tried to see if there was any gas pipe around, but couldn't see anything. Why was it called GAS struts when there was no gas involved?

There is gas in the lower cylindrical part which apparently is called an hydraulic arm. The gas is what keeps the arm extended and holds the door open. When you pull the door closed, the gas is compressed to allow the closing. They have similar struts on the doors of station wagons where you lift the back window up and it stays up while you load your shopping or whatever. The struts come in different sizes depending on the load they have to lift. Does this make sense? I hope so. And now we both know as I sort of understood it before but not completely.

I think that is it now. I just need to fill the cupboards. And of course the awning has to be replaced. That should happen on Thursday.

It seems that with every bit of hardware there are a dozen options as regards size, fittings, etc.

@judyev I do like the idea of ‘fat’ being used as the past tense of the verb to fit. It makes a lot of sense. How come the past of to teach is I taught yet the past of to preach is not I praught?

In my world, these things would be spring loaded so they can open with a bit of welly!

How do you mean 'spring-loaded' and is a welly a wellington boot? These cupboards are up against the ceiling.

Look at you getting things done, and increasing the value of the bus one step at a time. You might get all of this done and then just decide to keep it.

This is in the caravan but it's okay. I'm always saying one when I mean the other too. It will be a bit hard giving up the bus as it is so nice to live in.
