Acquired taste

I'm sure you've all heard of food items being an 'acquired taste'. Widely popular food like Marmite, liquorice and marmalade for instance, can leave a horrible taste in your mouth the first few times you eat them. But then after a while, they grow on you and you start liking them!
For me, avocado falls into that category. Well, somewhat. I never used to be able to stomach it but now that I know it's very good for you, I try to eat at least 1 every week. What food item would you say is an acquired taste for you? Is there anything you eat because it's good for you even though you don't really like the taste of it?

This is so funny. I just published a short post at another site about the joys of the avocado. I never had to acquire a taste. I grew up eating them.

i did find i could make a 'milkshake' with 'em, addin' 'em to smoothies makes 't very creamy. the taste hidden 'neath all the other fruits 'r dark cacao powder :)

@crazyhorseladycx Hahaha to be honest, some things we can never grow to enjoy - it is what it is! I don't think my husband will ever grow to like avo. I think it's like Marmite - you either like it or you don't. Taste is a very interesting thing

Avocados are an acquired taste for me. I would never eat them when I was younger, but now I love them. I make guacamole, put them in salads, put them on hamburgers, tacos, and pretty much anything if I have them around. I found a recipe on Pinterest where you use avocado in chicken salad instead of the mayonnaise and add a little lime juice. I tried it and it was the best chicken salad sandwich I ever ate. Spinach was also an acquired taste for me. Hated it as a child, but now I will put it in lots of dishes. Gives the dishes a nutrient kick.

@Lushlala It's not hard to make guacamole. I just put salsa in with the mashed avocado, add a little bit of lime juice, hot sauce, and cilantro if I have it. The store I work at had them on sale so I got some and made guacamole. I never used to like it nor would I try it because the color was a little off putting but now I could eat it all day long. I have even had deep fried avocado which was really good too.

No absolutely not. I wont eat it if I dont like it. But then, I rarely find any foods distasteful.

I like licorice and marmalade. I don't know what marmite is. Avocados I can take or leave. One thing I never liked is mangoes. They leave this weird taste in my mouth. We bought one each from a fruit stand a while back and I could not eat much of it. I don't like them canned, either.

Hey Jo Ann... I grew to like licorice and marmalade over time. I'm surprised you don't like mangoes because I love them so much, especially in a smoothie! But we're all different :)

I didn't like the taste of ginger, turmeric, fresh garlic but I believe it's good for me so I force myself to drink/eat. I love avocado even as a kid because we had avocado trees in our front yard. Not all avocados taste the same. I love almost all kinds of fruits/veggies. I cannot think of any fruit that I didn't like except for DURIAN and until this day I don't think I'd eat it because of its smell unless you pay me thousands of dollars.

Yes...many food items are like this. But I always give up on the first attempt only.

I have heard of that, yes....but not sure of any for myself. I will have to think on that.

Avocados are part of my normal diet since I was a child. I love them and I eat them at least 2 times a week.

Avocado no. Most things I try if they don't taste good I am not going to eat them anymore.

The food I acquired a taste for is peanut butter. As a child I hated it. I hated it throughout my teen years. I acquired a taste for it quite forcefully. I blame my daughter for that.
When I was pregnant I craved peanut butter! All I would snack on was toast with peanut butter and a glass of half milk, half cream. The more I ate it, the more I craved it. Needless to say, I now LOVE peanut butter and my daughter is a peanut butter hound!
