Pineapple Harvesting In Our Back Yard.

Trinidad And Tobago
May 24, 2018 12:13pm CST
Today my brother and I took a walk to the back of our land to check and see if our little patch of pineapple trees had pineapples to harvest. It was a circular patch that was clean to prevent a recent fire outbreak that was set by malicious neighbours. The same neighbours that boldly walks in and thief the mangoes from the tree. Possums (local name ‘manicou’) and agoutis and other night creatures feed on the pineapples once they are matured, even if they are not ripe. So we were hoping that we’ll find pineapples this morning. We found all 80 or so intact with no bites on them, and we conclude that poachers on our land had killed off the animals. But of the 80 only two pineapples were ripening. Hmmm, love that smell. Pineapple fragrance! Pineapples on the tree are so much sweeter when ripen on the tree than if picked greenish and then put to ripe. While we were there we lament the fact that our big pond was filled with salt water and only crocodiles and birds live there. And we check out all the other trees, portugals, limes, oranges, bananas, plums, coconuts, chalta, avocadoes, sugar cane, guava and a lot of other fruit trees. I just love the outdoor. Do you have fruit trees that is bearing? Are you fortunate to have lands to plant your own fruit trees? Credited: Picture taken from the internet, public domain.

@DianneN Indeed I am for it. But apart from sharing pictures, can you think of how?

No blackberries here, I think the weather do not permit. Homegrown pineapples are the sweetest.

Wow! I would love pineapple trees. We have coconuts, banana , avocado, starapple, soursop and mangoes. The last hurricane that hit us took our apple tree.

Oh oh, We don't have apple trees here, although you can grow them by placing ice at their roots, but they will not bear. Happy to see that you are surrounded by a variety of fruits. Must be great too.

I am aware that people have a scarcity of land, that why I am happy to be living in rural areas. I too, lived in the city for a while.

Yes, oh yes. These pineapples are so sweet and fragrant. Once I was going to Maracas beach and at the roadside the woman had little bags with cut pineapple slices soaking in water, salt pepper and bandhania seasoning. Hmm, yum yum yum. Pineapple chow. Pineapple hot from the sun is not good to eat. So the best time is to allow it to ripen more so that the whole room smells of pineapple, and then peel them. It takes some skill to peel them (and strength)

When I was a child I lived in an orchard full of pears and apples. Our yard now won't hold fruit trees, too many huge oaks and maples. We are very hidden from the sun by the leaves on the trees, and we have a small garden for herbs, lettuce and tomatoes.

I am sure that brought back some really great memories. As a child I grew up with lots of open land and spaces and then i didn't know it made an impact on me. As an adult, living in the city, I constantly gieve over the loss. Today I am back to rural living and loving it.

@Gita17112016 when we bought our forever house (we're staying until we die) we looked for privacy and found this house on a nice neighborhead but the back was forest, no people. We bought it the day we first saw it.. Love the privacy in the back.

If I have a vast land as yours, I would definitely be in heaven with all the fruits and crops you have there.

Wow! That's a lot of trees. You are very fortunate too. I love rural life and I love the outdoors early in the morning. We have cherries, plums, oranges and kiwis here too. The rest is not suitable for our climate. We have tropical climate here. My sister says Portual is a lot like Trinidad and Tobago.

We're not so fortunate to be able to have fruit trees that bear tree ripened fruit. Well I do have to admit that I do have mulberry trees. I doubt that they will bear fruit this year since they were scorched by the fire that burned down my house last year. I loved being able to go out and pick the berries right off the tree and stand in the yard and eat them. They were so good tree ripened! I got to enjoy tree ripened pineapples once, when I was living in Thailand. They were so wonderful and so sweet! They were nothing like the ones you get here in the United States. They are green and you have to let them get ripe before you cut into them, and they aren't nearly as sweet and juicy and flavorful as those you pick right off the vine! Your post has me drooling for pineapple, but I just can't face the kind we get, neither the green ones from the fruit section in the grocery store or the canned ones will do, I want the vine ripened ones that I enjoyed when I lived overseas! You are so lucky!!!!!!
