My daughter smokes. She is 46 and has smoked since she was about 12. She has tried to quit MANY times. She has done the QuitNow Program. She has tried it on her own. Nicorette is very unpleasant and that one medication that is supposed to help made her have really bad panic attacks. Do you have any ideas she hasn't tried?

I quit around 5 to 7 years ago with Chantix. It is the most poisonous thing I´ve ever had, but it helped. A psychiatrist friend told me that unless the person wanted firmly to quit, no pill or program would help. I haven´t smoked since then, but I do not dare have a single giggy puff. I say I´m a smoker who is not smoking.

Yeah, I don't think she wants to quit that badly.

@celticeagle I had to choose between vacations and smoking. I couldn´t buy the smokes AND go on a trip. I elected the holidays. Years later, my oncologist told me that I already had an emphysema. As I was dealing with cancer then , I did not mind. But emphysema and lung cancer go with smokes.

From everything I have read or researched, the one answer that always pops up is quitting cold turkey. They say after 72 hours you feel different. And no matter what method one uses to quit, it is said that the urge is always there. Though it does fade over time. I smoke and shouldn't. I tried many times myself to quit. It is not easy. I think one has to be in the right frame of mind in order to give them up. And do not be around other smokers. That is no help at all.

@noni1959 I need to put them down once and for all. But my girlfriend smokes so it will be harder for me to not be around it.

It's very hard. I tried to quit many times but cold turkey was the way that did it. You do feel better after three days and can breathe. The urge will be there for awhile and even to this day I'll have a dream now and then I started smoking again and in my dream I'm so upset because I'm addicted again. I always wake up relieved.

I just quit cold turkey but you really have to want to quit and almost everyone I know who has been successful with quitting has done it the same way, it is not worth exchanging one crutch for another. It is horrible and it just has to be gotten through.

@celticeagle My guess is she doesn't want it bad enough yet. It is hard, there is no way around it and it takes a lot of willpower. I have never had even one puff since I quit 25 years ago cause I know it I do, I will have a hard time stopping.

Tell her that when she has to have an oxygen tank with her everywhere she goes; she might quit @celticeagle . I do think the patches and/or the hypnotherapist may be the way for her to go.

I have heard that hypnotherapy works. I've never tried it because I cannot be hypnotised but it might be another alternative for your daughter

If it can help people lose weight no reason why it wouldn't help in stopping smoking.

Until she is truly ready she will not stop. But cold turkey or with the help of hypnosis is the safest ways.

I smoked from age 11 to 18 and another brief time in 1982. The first time I tried the cut down and it was quitting cold turkey that worked for me. It was very hard especially since back then my ex husband smoked. I was pregnant and kept winding up in the hospital with my heart going crazy and the doctor scared me saying to quit or die in childbirth. Sometimes we have to be hit with the reality it can happen soon. In 1982 I started again thinking I can lose weight (yea, right) but quickly was addicted again. A week later my dad who was dying of cancer smelled it on me and said, "Loretta, it's no fun to die of cancer." I never lit up again. I'm now 59. I don't like them now and even have a bad allergy to them. Go figure. It may take her own scare to give her the push. Some of us have an addictive personality and unfortunately for me I turned to food and gained a lot of weight. I did lost a lot later but still fight it. She needs a different outlet for her stress. Going for walks, dancing, etc.

I think everyone has a certain stage they get to that is a place where they can quit. Some people have to try several times before they are able to quit for good.

I quit with hypnosis. It was only $40 back 13 years ago but its worth every cent. I have not smoked since. I think it was this guy.

I think each individual has their own way of being able to quit.
