A couple years ago, whale watchers in British Columbia were treated to a sight for sore eyes. A deer swimming with killer whales of the BC coast was a once in a lifetime sight for the spectators. The whales did not attack the deer and the deer was safely herded out of the water after the whales went out to sea. However, this may not be that unusual a sight if you consider that whales descended from deer like ancestors according to scientists. While it was long known that the ancestors of whales once walked on dry land, the identity of the whale's ancestors was just recently discovered. Scientist believe that a 49 million year old skeleton of a mammal that looks like a small deer is the closest relative found, so far, to the whale. Could it be that the killer whales sensed that the deer was family when they were swimming together? They do make strange bedfellows. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/12/071220220241.htm

Strange bedfellows indeed. Hard to imagine a deer related to a whale.

Nature is so fascinating and I marvel at some of the theories I hear about life in general.

A deer is not a food source or a threat and the whales sensed that.

I guess that is one explanation.

Nice if they indeed recognize their ancient descendants and decided to give the deer another chance in life. I guess that new discoveries they are somehow related is interesting that an animal like a deer was somehow related to each other.

@Freelanzer True were all intertwined by our genes somehow.

Just goes to show how totally opposite creatures are related and how much our lives are intertwined.

Science sure has some crazy theories. I don't see a deer in that picture. I'm glad it was safe with the whales.

I am always amazed by some of the things scientists come up with and I am also skeptical in some cases.

@just4him I think we need to be skeptical as their theories change so often.

@Freelanzer When it comes to what scientists say about anything, especially our health, I'm always skeptical.

maybe the whales wanted the deer to grow bigger, so they can devour a full-grown deer?

I wonder what would have happened if the whales got the deer out to see away from prying eyes, Then it could have been dinner time.
