Wisdom Teeth

Isn't is a weird idea that someday humans will evolve to the point where we won't even have wisdom teeth anymore? I wish I was a part of those humans because wisdom teeth really suck. I have been dealing with my wisdom teeth acting up, because I don't have the money to get them extracted. I will someday, but until then I just suffer for like a week and then I'm okay for another 6 months. But isn't it crazy to think that there is going to be a generation that won't have to deal with that pain anymore? Humans used to have more teeth than we do today and that included the wisdom teeth. It used to be an old wives tale that when you started growing your wisdom teeth that meant that half of your life was over, so when I was started growing mine at 17, I was a little startled, but obviously that is false because most people start growing theirs at that age and obviously they are still alive. The reason why humans have wisdom teeth and extra teeth is that before we had nice soft foods, easy tender to eat stuff, humans ate such hard and tough foods. The main reason why those back molars exist is so humans could eat plants and be able to chew up the plant membrane so it was easy to digest in their stomachs. I thought that, that was so interesting. But since humans were eating softer foods and evolving our mouths were getting smaller and there was no point to having so many teeth. One of the reasons why we have to get our wisdom teeth extracted is that our mouths are actually too small for the wisdom teeth and can really mess up the nerve endings of your other teeth when not taken out. They can also become impacted which means your teeth are preventing your wisdom teeth from growing and can actually really mess up your mouth, causing your teeth to move and squish together and can cause real problems later on in life. So I guess if you are a person with a big mouth, you don't really have to worry about your wisdom teeth, especially if you don't use the wisdom they bring you ;) What age did you start growing your wisdom teeth and if you did, when did you get them extracted?

I think my wisdom teeth started to come in when I was in my early 20's. I've never dealt with toothaches like that until they started to come in. I had all four removed, one at a time, between 2013 and 2015. The top two were pulled and the bottom two were surgically removed, and I don't miss them at all. They were nothing but trouble from day one. My old dentist said I had a small mouth, made getting the X-rays nice and annoying lol. :)

@tammys85 it is where our lower jaw is which is the thing that moves the most so it only makes sense

I am one of the small mouthed people who had to get more than just wisdom teeth extracted. My wisdom teeth actually never had a chance to come out . . . I think I was about 20 and xrays showed that one would eventually impact the bottom row - and if they ever came out, I wouldn't be able to bite down. Turns out I only had 3 wisdom teeth and I had to have them surgically removed as they were still under the gums.

Oh wow that is so interesting and pretty lucky you didn't have to deal with the growing because I remembered I had to go back to my baby days and chew on a rag when they were growing and that was the only thing that helped haha

@DesirousDreamer I talked to a fellow mom earlier - she said her daughter was going through wisdom teeth issues right now - and she is 17 (that sounds sooooo young - my generation will say 20 to mid 20s). Her one wisdom tooth is growing sideways, and somehow it's leaving a hole there and it's hard for her to chew. Oh man, I totally cannot imagine the whole teething thing - I forgot about the rag!!

I have a small mouth and they did crook my teeth, when I was 40 years old I got all but one extracted and had major dental work done. While some of my teeth are still crooked the top are not as bad. I remember the pain of getting those teeth. No that was just a lie some old bat made up. I am double my age and more since I cut mine.

My teeth are not crooked, they all grew funny but I never had to get braces. I don't know if it was a lie, I think it is just made sense, because back then life expectancy was so much shorter. So if you started growing them at 18, being 36 and dying then was really not all that strange. Since 40-50 was considered really old

I have already extrated two of them and I am getting courage to remove the others. I wish I was one of those humans that don't have it but I guess I am not that evolved

Can't remember when mine came through, but I had them extracted in my 20's as they were giving me gip. I've been suffering neuralgia ever since.

Only two of mine ever came in, and I was lucky with the timing. I was in the Army and an Army dentist pulled them for me.
