The term party school is used to refer to a college or university (usually in the United States) that has a reputation for heavy alcohol and drug use or a general culture of licentiousness at the expense of educational credibility and integrity.

I've heard that some are noted for being a party school but I also agree with @kandae11 that students don't have to participate

I went to a private university started by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, so I don’t think there was any room for partying.

@Kandae11 — I had three nuns for professors. The two sweet ones wore their habits, while the one who was like the Penguin in The Blues Brothers did not.

@FourWalls - I went to a Catholic all-girl high school. Some of the teachers were nuns.

When our son was getting ready for his university education, we all knew that there would be some partying, but that wasn't the basis for his choice of schools. We looked at the employment rate and the rate of students who went on to take more degrees, and of course the distance played a factor also. He travelled 4 hours to his university, so that meant that he did not come home often, but he also chose not to live on campus (except for the first year) and he lived about 45 minutes away from the university because he wanted a place that he could study quietly without hearing about this party or that party.

@amadeo Not really. Because we lived in a rural area without a university, the cost of such an education is in the tens of thousands of dollars as you have to factor in the living expenses. Most families cannot foot such a bill for a party session. All of our son's friends have at least 1 degree and are involved in governmental affairs of one sort of another. One former roommate was the key-note speaker for the NATO conference held in Ottawa a couple of years ago. All of his friends studied hard and made good of their educational years. Another friend is a lawyer for the Canadian Embassy.

The U of Oregon is sort of a party school and the Arizona colleges have had reputations too.

Madison University had that reputation for a few years. I'm not certain if they still do.

It all depends upon the students. If they try to stay well then your college is well. But unfortunately my college is one of that college.

I did not go to a college where you went away and lived there. I went to one at night and worked during the day.

Some university students really like to party hard and don't worry too much about their studies.

I'm sure there are many of those everywhere and it is tough for college kids to try to go to school and stay away from that behaviour. And there are so so many that do that lifestyle and their studies suffer.

I went to Macomb Community College, also known as "12 Mile High" - so yeah, you could def. call it a party school. Ironically, I ended up working there....for 5 years. But it was still a party school, even while I was working there. Made lots of friends. I'll always like that school.
