No Power, So....

Sitting without power for three hours last night. I wondered what I used to do when I was young and we had power interruptions at night. It didn't happen as often back then as it does now, but I remember I had glow in the dark cut outs of the moon and stars and planets and I used to lay looking at those till I drifted off to sleep or we would make shadow puppets on the wall behind a flickering candle flame.... So, what did I do last night? I mean screaming and banging my head against the wall aside,  I tried to make shadow puppets again...yes, I didn't have things charged, so no power, no battery power and so I saw my shadow on the wall and thought "hey, shadow puppets!" Only thing is I only remembered how to make a bunny! Yep, that was the extent of my shadow puppet prowess! Can you make shadow puppets? What do you do when you're sitting with a power interruption at night? I hope you all are having a good week. Photo is mine of some cheery flowers in my home.

@bluesa I agree. Next week, I am planning to buy a rechargeable lamp.

@Shavkat that is a good idea, I wish most homes could be run by solar power, it is a pity solar panels are so expensive, a rechargeable lamp is the next best thing.

I do not believe I still remember how to do shadow puppets. Without power it is a serious problem, you cannot even read a book.

@bluesa Going out for a walk is not an option if the streets are dark.

@LadyDuck , yes and here it is already dark outside by about 6 p.m . And the power went off 8:30 p.m last night. I am going to make dinner now in case they cut the power again tonight without warning. It is 5 p.m now.

Yes, there was no warning, Anna, so I didn't have anything charged. We had our lanterns and I saw my shadow and I tried to put a positive spin on having no power. Aside from the bunny, I don't remember how to make shadow puppets either.

Why does your power keep going out? Do the people at the power plant not know what they're doing? Do they keep running out of fuel? Is someone falling asleep at the controls? It's horrible that you keep having to go without power so often!

@moffittjc , it is the government that runs the power station. They never kept things maintained. Now they are supposedly "fixing" things, which is apparently why we suddenly sit without electricity all of a sudden, many many times.

Apparently it is either a switch keeps tripping or they are doing maintenance. I think you have it right though, they probably just don't know what they are doing or they are falling asleep! We complain, but it doesn't help in the slightest. It is horrible and frustrating, Jeff. If I didn't have a sense of humour my switch would have tripped a long time ago!

@bluesa Is it a private company that runs the power station, or the government? If it's the government, then there is absolutely no incentive for them to keep the power on. But if it's a private company, then every time the power goes off they aren't making money. No power = no revenue = no profit. A private utility company has every incentive in the world to keep you power on uninterrupted to ensure that they continue to make money.

Love your flowers! I was never much good at making shadow puppets and haven’t done so for ages. Lol! Having no power is the pits, but I love to read by candlelight.

Thank you, Dianne. I figured out I am not much good at making shadow puppets last night. We have oil lamps but they don't provide enough light to read by.

@DianneN , yes, thank goodness we got electricity back after those three hours. I couldn't find the darn flashlight last night. I am going to start organising things better. Nearly 1 a.m here, so off to try to sleep. Have a lovely evening further, Dianne.

@bluesa I imagine oil lamps wouldn't throw much light. Candles aren't much better, but I've used flashlights, too. Hope your electricity is back on now!!!!

@ridingbet , it is good you make sure your dogs are kept calm, Daisy sleeps by our feet. Good you have solar lights, they would illuminate a room well.

@bluesa sometimes my son and i make shadow puppets when we light candles at night, but often too, we play with our dogs because they may be scared of the dark, that is why we bring inside some solar lights to illuminate our living room.

I need to find a battery powered radio, I am so used to using my smart phone to listen to music. Yes, I forgot that when I was younger I would read by flashlight too. Too used to technology.

@bluesa Maybe I did them before. I should do them for my Sophie and see what she thinks of them.

There was a time we were without power for a week after a major hurricane. I read by battery operated lamp and went to bed early.

Most days we sat without power was three, and that was so frustrating. Sorry you waited so long for power to be restored.

I would not have the mood for puppet. I rather find newspapers to fan myself to reduce the heat during blackouts

Your post is a good reminder that we can be quite creative to entertain ourselves when we aren't relying on our electronics. The few times that we've lost power, the first thing I did was light candles (if at night). I've taken a nap, I've done housework, and just talked with my husband.

Yes, we have to be creative where I live quite often. Now we're heading for summer I might go sit in the garden and star gaze. But I am hoping they sort out the power issues. A good time to chat with loved ones. :-)

When there's no power, I just watch some movies on my phone or listen to music. Sometimes I play on my iPad so I won't get bored.

I didn't have enough battery power, so couldn't do any of that. I don't like over charging batteries but the way they keep surprising us I might have to keep things on charge.

Sorry you were without power for 5 days. I am glad you made it through the typhoon. I haven't played cards in years, but that would be a good way to pass some time.
