Look what I found in a tree

I’ve been down in our patch of bush raking up leaf litter and during it. The area hasn’t been burnt for years so I raked a patch bare first and now I’m burning small heaps of leaves at a time. There is only me here so I don’t want the fire to get away. While I was there I spotted a cute little bird’s nest at about waist height. It has been very carefully and neatly built and there are two tiny eggs in it. I came back to the house for my camera and when I came back a willy-wagtail was sitting on the eggs. When she left later I took a quick photo of the nest then later took one with her in it. I’ve had to crop it heavily so it’s not well-focussed. The nest with the bird in it is slightly left and about centre of the photo I’ve paired with another wagtail nest that was built in my brother’s machinery shed. They are cute little black and white birds which continually wag their tails from side to side hence the name.

That is so nice. Here we think if the birds have nest in your house, it will bring you good luck I think they find you are good and they feel happy to set up their nest in such a good environment

@youless Really? I have not heard about that. I guess that's why I saw some Chinese here like to buy the bird nests and hang them in the front yard for decoration. I thought it's purely for decoration. There were a few times some bird built nest in my front yard. I thought it's because my front yard is too messy, so the birds were able to use some "garbage" to build their nest.

Birds can't nest in our house thank goodness but we do love to see them around the place. They have two bird baths here - one out the front and the other at the back of the house. Even the kangaroos appreciate the water.

This is unusual, they usually build their nests higher in the branches. This is cute.

@JudyEv The magpies are very noisy, during summer a couple brought here their baby to get seeds from our feeders.

@LadyDuck If your magpies are the same as those in England they are slightly different to ours. I guess the English thought they looked similar and gave them the same name.

As I type I'm looking out at a magpie having drink from the birdbath. Yes the nest is very low especially as it is so exposed.

A bird used to build a nest on an old bug zapper I had under the eaves of the porch. I took it down..because those birds used to startle at night if the door was open. I didn't want one ending up in the house.

@JudyEv in one of the houses i lived in birds for in the chimney once.I called animal control who got them out . Our old grey car who didn't move a muscle if he did have to was as quick as lightning getting one of those birds in his mouth.. i hid in a bedroom and the animal control but eventually got both birds out of the house!

A bird loose in the house can cause pandemonium. One not-so-bright ginger cat let one loose in our bedroom once and the super-bright grey cat was up the curtains after it. Just what you want at 5 in the morning.

@snowy22315 It's amazing how much energy even an old cat can have when they want to.

These birds do not seem to be the smarter : this nest is very low, I hope there is no cat around, and the other is at a good location... to cook eggs.

@JudyEv My cat would have caught the bird before eating the eggs. I had to stop to feed birds in my previous home when I realized that my bird feeder was also a cat feeder.

And that is what we think happened - the eggs got fried. We don't have cats here but there are native cats (chudditches) which would be partial to a couple of eggs. And occasionally someone will dump a cat and it will find its way here.

@topffer Bad cat! Some love hunting don't they? Others don't bother so much if they are fed well.

Oh wow that is very low nesting of the bird, cannot be in here because the kids will surely get the eggs and shoo away the birds. We also have mango tree in the yard and we see some nest there but because its taller we cannot closely snap of it.

It is very low but the branches make an ideal support for the nest. Usually it is not possible to get a photo inside the nest. The one I took doesn't really show the eggs but I wanted to be quick and get out the way so I wouldn't frighten off the bird.

They are neatly made nests. I was surprised at the one made in machinery shed. Just wondering if the eggs would fall down from the nest.

I didn't realise that you couldn't actually see the nest in the shed. I've fixed it now. I think the nest was too close to the tin roof so though the eggs hatched it was too hot for the poor little things.

@JudyEv I could see it. I was just wondering if it might fall with the weight of eggs. So the eggs hatched and were the chicks not able to survive due to heat??

@JudyEv Definitely the skill of a trapeze artist. I am so sad if the chicks could not survive the heat.

Staying in various backpackers across Australia you never forget the colorful birds who seem so happy - and terrified by the fruitbacks hanging of the drain pipe!
