I have been a Democrat most of my years. How did I chose this? In the early days they tell me t hat they work for the small people Republican work for the bigger ones. Now what is going to happen to the party now? Bomb scare for Robert DiNero?

Being British, I am none of these. However, I do remember being told at school that the main American parties - at that time back in the 1960s - were very similar in terms of their political scope, encompassing a wide range of opinions that overlapped in many places. The division into left and right seems to have intensified in recent years, though. That said, the Democrats are far from being a true left-wing party even now. They probably have much more in common with the British Conservative Party than the Labour Party. One thing that has always puzzled me is why the Republicans use the colour red and the Democrats blue. Red is recognized the world over as the colour of left-wing parties, but not apparently in the United States!

The US Democrats would be centrists in France, and somebody like Trump would have a seat at the right of our far right, he is a lot more extremist than Marine Le Pen.

@amadeo She is a far right leader friendly to your president, he supported her candidature to our presidential election in France last year.

We are strong Democrats. Our son, the attorney, used to be a Republican, but came to his senses.

I no longer even care what the political parties are doing. It's impossible to tell what a candidate will do once in office and my trust level in our government (any government) is really really low. I am not saying all politicians are bad guys, I just think I can run my own life without em. ETA: I don't consider myself any of the above.

We have many more parties than that in France. I tend to vote for the less worse candidate without caring for the political sticker, I exclude only extremists from my panel of possibilities, from the left like from the right.

I am a lifelong Democrat, the other side has never had a candidate that I could begin to support. As far back as Hoover and beyond, probably, they have been the party that advocates for the most wealthy and privileged and today it is worse than ever. They want to attack Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid now and will do so if they retain both houses.
