I belong to a group, but don't use it too much.
I have given away a few things I didn't want anymore that way.

am glad you know of it, for us it has helped us greatly since our housefire and the kids lost the most. we have slowly got beds from the several freecycle groups I belong to..clothing which also we got from church sales and the free clothing bank in town...got my stacked washer and dryer to help us with laundry and a metal mail box pole..these things have helped us by being free and when people would have thrown them away it is obviously the better method. Thanks for you response!!

Thanks for noting the fire. The freecycle group has helped us. We now all have beds. Also got alot of silverware and cookware from the freecycle groups. Sorry for the difficulty you experienced however something like that does seem to make us stronger!

I've been to that website for my area. I think it's great. There are a lot of people that are actually in need of other people's old items. I only tried it for a month, because it was hard getting something you wanted.
People would often beat me to the item I would find. It's a very fast paced community, but useful!

The groups I belong to restrict those the would grab and resell. So I think that that curtails some of the frustrating actions.

I help moderate our local Freecycle, its a wonderful way to pass on items within the local neighbourhood, I've also met some lovely people through it who have wonderful approaches to life

People are what makes the group work. Also the no shows can make it difficult however that can create opportunities for those that are reliable. It is fun to connect with like minded people

I love it that freecycle is getting so much publicity. This is a wonderful group. Once there was someone in our area giving away a wood stove. It was too large for our needs or I would have dragged my husband over and grabbed it! Other things like bird cages, stoves, washers, etc.

publicity comes from its members, you can be listed in the freecycle national website! My freecycle group has regular emails through Yahoo.

Yes, there is a freecycle group in our area and it seems to be a really good one. I've given away a few things and gotten a few things. It's better to let others use things you've grown tired of instead of just throwing them away!

I totally agree. If people had not had things to share then I would not be doing as good as we are since our housefire. So helpful and will never be forgotten. When we are on our feet I think from time to time I will find someone asking for something and see if I can buy it and respond for them. Kinda off the mark however it might get passed on when they are done!

I used to moderate a Freecycle group for two years until I moved. I created the group and went from 0 to over 1000 members in the time i wasthere.
Now I live in Colorado, and the freecycles here totally suck. Nobody gives away anything and if they do, they are gone faster than fast.
I started a local online yardsalein group and now instead of giving stuff away, I sell it online locally. I started the group 3 weeks ago and I now have over 80 members in my group. We sell and buy to local people and they come and get the stuff, like Craigslist, but more localized.
Thanks for the topic!
PS....I love Freecycle when it is managed correctly.

I guess different areas feel differently about their used items. I am sure you are missed in the freecycle world. Glad you have found a new niche though. Creativity cannot be squashed. You are welcome for this topic.

Keep on trying, it sometimes pays to answer the listing if a bit late and no pick up is posted since sometimes the people are a no show. Thanks and Happy Holidays to you too. Am deciding on a new avatar for here and sure will miss this kitty. Thanks for commenting on it and the discussion.

I went to a Christmas party tonight and one of the girls were talking about it so I checked it out and ending up joining. What a good way to get rid of some of my stuff that I no longer use. Like the saying goes, "one man's trash is another man's treasure" And hopefully I might be able to find some things I want too.

Welcome to the world of freecycling. I think you will have good things to find. Be alert and communicate you might end up on a list and as I have done when there are no shows I get known as showing up and sometimes they just email me. Good luck!!

I belong to our local freecycling group. I think it's a lot of fun. I missed out on an L-shaped sectional this week because I didn't respond quickly enough. I wish it offered something similar to Southwest Airlines' "ding" feature that makes a sound on your computer whenever Southwest releases a bargain airfare.

Yes if you don't kind on top of the listing of freecycle items it can get away from you. Have missed out on a few things myself. One day in the future we can create a computer that responds to each of us with our own wanted features.
