A great year for bottlebrush or callistemon plants

Callistemon/bottlebrush

We arrived home about an hour ago after attending a funeral. Although these are always sad occasions, the day went off very well. Our friend’s mother passed away and we acted as her chauffeur and supports for the few days we were there. I spotted this very beautiful hedge in the town. It is a red bottlebrush or Callistemon. The genus originated in Australia but is widely cultivated in other regions and has naturalised in various locations. The common name, ‘bottlebrush’, comes from the cylindrical, brush like flowers which resemble a traditional bottle brush. They prefer moist conditions or regular watering in drier areas. Some are drought resistant while many are used in ornamental landscaping. It seems that conditions are ideal for these bushes/trees this year as we have seen dozens and dozens of very beautiful specimens.

They are found in temperate areas. I don't know how they would cope with snow.

I have always been a fan of bottle brush plants. Most of the time here they are just flowers on smaller plants. I am not sure I have seen them on a bush like this. Maybe I have, I just don't remember. But they are pretty.

Some become quite big trees. I guess it depends on the conditions - and there are a number of varieties too.

@JudyEv I imagine the smaller potted plant varieties might be in the same family. I really don't know.
