Holly survived!

I have been in touch with my friends Howie and Carol since the Paradise fire wiped out their home. At first, Howie wasn't sure that my girlfriend, Holly, had survived. It turned out that Howie's girlfriend, Carol, made the right decision and left Holly in the pasture with the gate open so she could bolt if she needed to. People on the roads from Paradise were stuck in gridlock. Many had to abandon their cars and run for their lives. A horse trailer would not have worked. Right now I'm thankful to the horse gods and to Carol for her quick decision-making.

It's a strange time for the people of Paradise. They're not allowed to return to their land yet.

It can be really difficult to know what is best for pets/animals when there is a natural disaster. I'm glad Holly survived.

@TheHorse Glad the chickens made it too. A few years ago we had some flooding in our area and the water level rose quite fast overnight. The road rises slightly as it passes through the village, so at that end the water is deeper, and some neighbours lost their chickens in the night because they drowned in the sudden flood.

@Fleura Oh, that is sad. I was hoping they found higher ground.

I agree. I do trust "horse sense" and probably would have done the same thing Carol did. A funny (if anything can be funny at this juncture) side note: All of their chickens survived.

So how do they know Holly survived? Has anyone found her? Or is the pasture just empty?

When there is a fire, most of the time the only right thing to do is to open the gates so the animals can follow their instinct ans run for safety. I am glad that Holly is safe.

@TheHorse Freeing the animals is the only opportunity you can offer to them to save their life.

That was my first thought. Any traffic leaving the are would have been gridlocked, so the horses running free would have been unlikely to get hit.

@TheHorse Close to home is not surprising. Glad she found safety when it was needed. But they are usually smarter than we are about that stuff.

@wolfgirl569 There's a reason people talk about "horse sense." Heh. I do wonder hw many people lost pets and livestock up there.

It must have indeed. I'm hoping to head up there and help them rebuild when the time comes. Holly is my first good horse friend since my own horse passed away a couple of years ago.

Yes. At a personal level, I was relieved big time. Holly is the first horse I've "hung around" with since my own horse passed away a couple of years ago. We'd been together for 23 years.

That fire is so devastating. My heart aches for all the people, animals and families. We have six horses and a donkey. If a fire comes this way and not enough time to load, we have to open all the gates and pray. We are in a forest so the risk is there.

My friends tell me that kindness is everywhere (in towns near Paradise) right now. People bringing food and blankets to those camping in WalMart parking lots, etc.
