What gives your life meaning?

I know that some MyLotters don't like religious posts, but I actually enjoy them. They give me a chance to reflect on deep issues like: Is God necessary for life to have meaning? What gives my life meaning? How do people feel whose lives (to them) have no meaning?
What gives your life meaning? Have you gone through a stage (or stages) where life felt like it had no meaning? Did you wind up depressed?
What gives my life meaning now? Passing on my love of music, nature and scientific inquiry to the next generation. Playing music with friends. Being one with nature when I have the chance.
When did life seem like it had no meaning? When I decided I could no longer be a math and physics major in college because I couldn't discuss what I was learning with my friends. I felt lonely and depressed. And of course, when I lost people that I loved. But grieving is natural.
How about you? What gives your life the most meaning? And what brought on your times of "existential crisis"?

@CarolDM Do you know this song? It's an e.e. cummings poem set to music by Michael Hedges.

I am one that is curious about everything and so I have some interests in everything. If I don't care for a topic, I will simply move on and allow those who are interested to discuss it.
I think that many things give me meaning in life as long as God is in my life. He is the most important ingredient in the cake of life. He is my real life, my air, my water, my food and my future. Without God nothing else means anything to me!

@TheHorse Can you talk a bit of how God can be a part of the Human Spirit?

@1hopefulman Well, I think humans are unique in trying to find meaning in life (beyond survival). And we're (perhaps) unique in asking questions about right and wrong. In a sense, only humans can "know" (or at least seek) God. And yet God oversees everything (including newts, rocks, and hangnails). And by definition, God is omniscient and omnipresent. The images we have for God and his human servants (I'm thinking of Moses, John, Jesus, etc.) are creations of humans. And the stories we read about God and His followers, are creations of humans as well. So perhaps what we know of God is limited to creations by man, trying to represent something that is far bigger than we can comprehend. And those who try to do good, whether it be in the name of Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, or common sense (humans are social being and need each other) may have simply found the "best" part of the human spirit.

Existential is not a word I'm familiar with, though I've heard it.
What gives my life meaning - being with likeminded people. Sharing here on myLot. God. My writing.
When did life have no meaning - there was a time when I was married and everything went wrong and we separated. I was ready to throw in the towel. I even called my mother to tell her she wouldn't have a daughter much longer. Then my husband came back and we patched things up for a few more years and when we did divorce, I could handle it.

That sounds like a good and true story. I've had relationships go South. When they first did so, I was both depresed and angry. But I now can see how I could have done things differently. And I feel compassion both for the others (excusing those in my freezer) and myself.

I believe faith is work in progress and will evolve with each passing generation and change in consciousness. The basics might not change unless there are groundbreaking new revelations.
I was a professional accountant working in the industry for over forty years and I am finally retired now. I was looking for meaning to my life over and above what I could find in work and family life. I kept an open mind to absorb from different faiths and even from those who had reasons to have none at all.
I do not have any real disappointments, heartbreaks, as life has been kind to me despite the few hiccups that none are spared. Blessings more than offset them - siva

@TheHorse I like to air my views on beliefs and politics, but they are avoided by most here. Maybe, this site is not meant for such discussions, I can understand
Religion and politics bring out more of emotional responses as they are based on our perception than hard proof; both are, sadly. usurped by few for their selfish ends. Hypocrisy and charlatans abound.
Religion should unite people but it has not sadly. More people (innocents) get killed by fanatic adherents all through history. Obviously, love and compassion are in the back burner - it is more of mine is greater than yours. The fact is there is only one creation, creator. It is like water but it has hundreds of names in different languages. How you pronounce it differs from how I do even!
I like to understand different views and experiences without judging others. Our experiences and cultural backgrounds are different and they leave their mark. I like to delve deeper based on personal experiences.
I agree we need something to hold on to beyond this life which is temporary. Nothing can be taken away from here. We are not the physical body but if it is all there in our lives, then our beliefs are wrong. But do we have hard proof? My inner voice tells me there is more - siva

After getting a second chance to live, I appreciate life more than anything. I try to make each day purposeful. I live life on day to day basis and feel grateful every morning that I have another day to look forward to and I have to make the best moments today.

God absolutely gives my life meaning. He's the creator of my life and He deserves all praise. It's not religious, it's a relationship I have with Jesus. =)
By the grace of God I have my husband and children who also bring great meaning to my life.
The difference in my life now is I look to bless others and I don't focus on my feelings/problems-I focus on helping others and showing them God's love.

Just waking up in the morning gives my life the most meaning--and looking out the window at all Mother Nature has given me adds to that meaning.

Wow, what a deep discussion. My relationship with Jesus Christ is the primary reason for my existance. I thank God every day for my family and relatively good health. I guess the biggest crisis was the year my husband and I were separated, but God put our marriage back together.
Is that photo you and your kids? They're adorable!

@TheHorse Some are born with many health issues. So far we are blessed with his heart checking out good, he has good eye sight and good hearing. He does get gerd, sleep issues, and sensory issues. He's a head of schedule than expected at 14 months.

@Hannihar I feel the presence of G-d the most when I am working with kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. When I teach college, I THINK I am "doing the right thing." When I work with a troubled young kid, and teach them something positive, I KNOW I am doing the right thing.

God and my family give my life the most meaning. I do believe in God and I believe that he's always around when either positive or negative things happen to me. I am a guy who still deals with his inner insecurities, and that is what brings times of existential crisis which sometimes knocks me down. Don't know if one day I will wind up overcoming my insecurities in the meantime I pray to God so I can forget about them and carry on. Nice post, makes us reflect about our lives. :)

When every step I take is always imagined in the face of my parents, that's my strength to make myself more meaningful, the love of my parents means so much to me. I will continue to move towards a bright future, I do not want to get lost because they are trapped in a life in this world.
When we have strong principles that will later become the strength of our faith

Easy when my oldest son passed I did think about just giving up. But I had another son and 2 step daughters. I now have grandchildren that I am glad to be here to see.

Yeppers. I lost a lot of people early. But I didn't really think of giving up. I vowed to carry on ther memories in what I do. Losing a child would be the most difficult, I think. I had one of my client kids murdered (after she had left our program). It made me feel numb for a long time. I just passed this poem/song on to CarolDM. It's an e.e. cummings poem. I listen to it periodically.

If we think that there is a reason behind everything, we can then find meaning, behind the reason, but only from our understanding of the reason.
How do reason and meaning fit together?
The meaningless life has never found a reason to live, and the meaningless life never understands its own self of life, unless it finds God, or a reason to explain life in the terms which give meaning, for meaning is acquired not given, whereas reason can be worked out, or found, or given, but understanding comes from the marriage of the two, reason with meaning.
When you give meaning to reason, you also build a greater understanding then too.

Even nothing can be found to have a meaning. We give meaning to things from ourselves.

@Shiva49 Maybe it's in looking for meaning that we lose our sight of it. Most life gets meaning from its just living it. An ant is busy in its work. A bee makes honey for its queen. They are all meaningfully fulfilling their lives.
When we, because of our greater supposed consciousness, look for greater meaning, outside of our own moment of now, we fall over the step of now then, and risk getting stepped over by God then too..LOL...
Meaning is mixed in with purpose, and we find them both in our hearts, never in our minds.
The search though, has occupied many minds, and gives us a certain hurtful pleasure at times too, as we continue to search for our purpose with our minds in the manure pits of the world, and so we keep piling up our share, rather than letting go of it, and digging it back into the soil, and so only then will our own fruit tree of purpose really then grow and bear fruit, or meaning for us then too. Our own fruit, our own real meaning, our own real purpose.
The fruit of knowledge that we grow from our purpose is the only thing that can give us any real meaning.

@innertalks We occupy a minuscule dot in the universe. There should be a meaning for the vast space that seems to be vacant, wasted real estate!
We hardly know much but we can coexist taking a cue from nature, other species. But it looks we are too hypocritical, egoist, selfish, to find meaning in such! siva
