Two Dozen Empty Oyster Shells

Oysters, Christmas, New Zealand

The major part of our Christmas lunch was fresh seafood and shellfish We ate it in stages, one sort at a time. The three of us didn't take long to devour the oysters. All that is left now is the empty shells. We just ate them as they were, raw, straight from the shell. I can hear the non-seafood lovers groaning, but for us, used to fresh seafood and shellfish, they were a delicious treat. Probably the fact we only indulge like this at Christmas adds to our enjoyment. Do you enjoy fresh raw oysters?

My husband loves fresh raw oysters, I always bought oysters in France to have on the Christmas Eve. We do not get fresh oysters here, in this little country without the sea.

@valmnz When we lived in Monte-Carlo we had seafood all the time. Here I buy smoked salmon and I cross the border and go to Italy when I want fresh seafood, but oysters are not an Italian product.

That's nice. In fact I haven't tried the raw oysters yet. Usually I eat the roasted oysters.

I've never had oysters. I heard that's the best way to eat them. I don't know if I could eat raw oysters. I love seafood.

I guess I've just grown up with eating them as a child, but I know people who haven't been that lucky don't always like them.

@just4him yes they are expensive here now too. Interesting read East Coast as the ones we eat are East Coast. The others are from the Nelson region in Queen Charlotte Sounds at the top of the South Island and the best are from Bluff at the bottom of the South Island.

@valmnz They're very expensive. They are also more an east coast food than the midwest where I live.

I love to munch them raw. However, my tummy is too handle. I prefer to eat them being cooked.

@valmnz That would be a no. However we glutted ourselves on NZ lamb. I’m glad you enjoyed the oysters.

I think I've mentioned it before, we can't afford to buy NZ lamb here in New Zealand!!!!!! Way too expensive compared to other meat. So much lamb here but priced for the international market.

NO sorry I do not think I would like them. They are a thing of much ridicule here in the UK usually around the first person ever to have eaten them and his/her thoughts about why they would eat something like that! (But in much cruder terminology!

Yes, fresh oysters on the half shell are delicious. Reminds me of eating sushi and sashimi which I love.

I do enjoy fresh raw oysters. I only get the chance to have them occasionally so they are always a treat for me too.
