Christmas Club Took the Pain out of Christmas Grocery Shopping

I hate grocery shopping at the best of times, but it's one of life's necessities.I make this chore more complicated than I probably need to, by constantly debating whether to buy the cheapest option or a brand I am familiar with and like. I hate shopping even more at Christmas. I don't like parting with my money for small luxuries I know I can do without, but feel I need to buy because of seasonal expectations. However, this year I got wise, and managed to get away with paying nothing for my shopping - well, not on the day anyway. Throughout the year I contributed to our local supermarket Christmas Club, something I haven't done for years. I had a small amount deducted from my bank account once a fortnight, paid directly into my Christmas Club account. I hardly noticed the deduction and watched my Christmas Club savings grow online throughout the year. The first Christmas grocery outing I made I bought the items I considered most important. I walked out of the shop with my trolley full of goodies and I didn't have to pay a thing. I even had enough left to go back the next day and buy a few bottles of wine and beer. Do you belong to a Christmas Club or savings scheme to cope with Christmas grocery shopping?

No I dont belong to any Christmas club. You can make your shopping quite easy via some online shopping sites like Amazon pantry , Big basket and Groffers.com. All your grocerry stuff would be delivered at home. This will kill half of your pain. Also, check out the paymeny options such websites have they are awesome.

I put a certain percent of what I make in my savings account and spend that for Christmas.

@valmnz Shopping, especially at Christmas, is a loathsome enterprise and supermarkets are dens of iniquity. We cut back considerably this year even though we had 5 house guests (all kids and grandkids) and even more for Christmas dinner. Don’t know how I did it though I do move a little cash into a savings account regularly through the year, or try to.

That's why this year I decided to make a fortnightly contribution. All I had to do when the time came was swipe my little plastic card.

I keep my money in a high interest bearing savings account. My husband has been doing the grocery shopping for me. I just hand over a list.

That sounds like a great plan. We have Christmas club accounts with the bank, but not with grocery stores. I haven't had a Christmas club account in many years. I'm glad you took advantage of it this year.

I don't think it is offered at our store but I have done it in years past and it certainly takes the pain away.

The one I belong to is a nationwide chain and you have from 1 December to 31 January to use it. What's not used by that stage is carried over and can be redeemed next December. I spent all mine in two shops!

We have no Christmas Club here.I guess you definitely felt happy when you paid nothing for your shopping, though you paid for it in advance.

We have nothing like this. I do not like to shop, but grocery shopping is a need and I go once a week. We receive every Monday morning a flyer from our 3 main grocery stores with the "offers of the week". I usually check the offers and write down my list according to what they are on sale.

That sounds good. For some years quite some years ago,I would do the same for silk sari shops ,on the 13th month they would give an extra amount as interest and I would buy silk saris which would otherwise be costly. Not anymore though
