earning online site requests 5$ per month for membership , is it true?

Recently came across Medium .com. an article writing site. I heard something good news about this site but it is requesting me to pay some money for membership which I am perplexed. Can anyone share your views on this site, is it worth to pay, worth to spend time Kindly deliver your comments about this site

medium does not require fee. it's the readers who want to support the writer, needs to pay;
