Revolution in the Garden

I have a daily appointment with a handsome young man. He's a red Cocker Poo called Ralph and he lives two doors away. His family work or are out at school most of the day so I drop in each morning to let him run around the garden, chase balls and do whatever nature calls him to do. Today is was REALLY cold - it's even snowed this afternoon. I was wrapped up warm but by the time I got to Ralph I'd already taken a long walk around the village. Ralph had a trip to the groomer at the weekend and so is rather short haired at the moment so I didn't want to keep him out for too long. But when I went to get his bribery biscuits in order to call him back into the house, he refused to come. Instead he hid behind some planters beside the garden shed and looked at me with a very sad expression. It took me another 5 minutes to persuade him that a warm kitchen and some dog treats were better than hiding. He's always happy to see me arrive but quite reluctant to let me leave.

Poor little dog. We had to do much the same with a friends' dog while they were away and in the end I wouldn't go to see him as I couldn't bear the sad faces when we had to leave again. I'd send Vince who is nearly as soft-hearted as I am. He would spend some time there but the little dog always knew when he was thinking about leaving and would absent himself as much as possible.

Actually he's pretty good. He doesn't try to stop me leaving and he seems to know that I'll be back.

@boiboing A smart little dog. Sounds like he's got it all worked out.

@boiboing Ah for the simplicity of a dog’s life - so long as he has a friendly neighbour to play with him and worry about him getting cold.

The expression 'It's a dog's life' always seems to me to miss the point that a lot of dogs have a fab life.

Did he get to play in the snow? What did he make of it?

I saw him yesterday morning before the snow and I'm popping round shortly (but most of it has gone). So I'll have to ask his mum.

Awww, he probably enjoys your company after being alone. That's sweet of you to help out your neighbors.

Dog loves company, they want people to play with them or be beside them.

Yes indeed. My cats are similar but slightly less 'needy'.

@DianeBorg You wouldn't say that first thing in the morning when all three have me pinned to the bed.
