Monday Appointments Aplenty

Hi MyLot, **Update** We didn't end up going - due to the poor weather. We did still go to Applebees though and happily enough dad was pretty nice. Thank you all so much for prayers, good thoughts and kindness. We appreciate all. This means no answers until her rescheduled appointment in the middle of February. I will try to not stress** *Original post* On Monday, we go to my mom's doctor's appointment. This is an hour and a half drive each way and the weather is supposed to be snowy. Great. Oh well, I guess it's to be expected this time of year. This is both post-surgery check up and regular 3 month oncology visit. She doesn't have the c word, but since she does have that in her history.... they keep an eye on her levels. I know it is silly but each time I worry. There is one certain of blood level they particularly watch and the past time or 2 it's been a touch over normal. A few (very few) other things can effect that number - and some of them do apply to her , such as dehydration (an issue she's been having since surgery) , infection, and stress. Now I don't mean to make our situation sound like any more than anyone else... but I don't think anyone (physicians) know exactly what it's like - living with my dad. You can say outloud that my dad is "high maintenance" , that he is depressive, that he is demanding,.... but until you live with him you don't know exactly what that looks like. How he can, without thinking twice, take your entire day up and then complain that you aren't doing enough for him. How, when he's in a neutral to pleasant mood you do whatever he wants you to - even if you have other things to do - just because if you go against what he wants - there is that chance that he will become angry. How amazing it is - how much of your time and energy get spent on things like - - his bathroom habits. I did get off on a tangent there, but my point was - that I don't think the drs realize how stressful he really is and how much stress there is at home. It will be an all day appointment - she will have labwork done, and images. Then, while those things are processing - we will wait. Then she will see the Dr. and get an infusion of water. Why they couldn't put the infusion of water while we are waiting for images to process I don't know, but as long as they appointments go well I don't care. Then, as a treat, we will go to Applebees which is just a block or so away and have supper, a reward for a long day. It's nerve wracking on many levels. My mom and how she's doing. What her blood work is and what her images are. Getting answer about how to stop the dehydration. If she can get rid of the tube in her kidney. And not at all least - if that weren't stressful enough - keeping my dad happy, entertained and all of his needs served while we are there all day. I pray and I trust in God. Last year the Dr. thought that it was c word for my mom, but even through all of her images, scans, and tests, and even with her recent surgery- when the physician was actually in there - actually visually looking around - no c word. I feel certain this is God at work, and I will continue to trust in Him that this will go fine. We appreciate all thoughts, prayers and good vibes sent. Hope things are going well for everyone else and that all in the path of the winter storm stay safe. Photo: Pixabay

@responsiveme Good point! We ended up not going yesterday due to bad weather, but we did go to our local Applebees - it's similar to a bar and grill but is known mostly for it's pork ribs.

I hope your appointments go well, and respite care is something that really seems in order here. You can't do it all..and stay sane.

@FayeHazel Maybe go away for a weekend and see how they like it managing on their own. They can't keep you there as a nursemaid hostage.

@snowy22315 It's true... I've been home a couple of times. First couples of times I did, oh my goodness I was amazed at the amount of chores waiting for me. However subsequent times have been better.... amazed...

I am hoping your Monday will be as stress free as possible. I am hoping for a good appointment for your mom and an enjoyable supper with her afterwards. As far as anything goes, no one can really understand what it's like dealing with a person who has a problem, whatever that problem might be. I've had experiences with family and friends alike and have had to deal with it in my own way. What might be stressful for some isn't as stressful for others. I just hope that your mom is able to improve and that the doctors understand that there are some stresses she simply cannot get away from.

Thank you so much - as it happens we didn't end up going due to bad weather. It's true - I tend to deal with my dad, even differently than my mom does- just what works for the person I guess. I have tried to share with Drs - but he comes with always and it's difficult. Thank you so much for the well wishes

@FayeHazel You remind me of a time many years ago now. I was in middle school and had to go to therapy. My mother and father sat in for a few of the appointments until the therapist realized I wouldn't talk when my father was around. He scared me.

They probably wait until after she sees the doc for the infusion of liquids just in case they have to retake some of the images. Sounds like it will be a long day for you lady, I am sorry your dad is such a handful, your getting it from all ends. Have you tried to talk to the doc to let him know what your dad is like? We did that with my dad and the doc gave my mom pills to dissolve in his coffee that calmed him down a little when he was getting out of hand.

@FayeHazel I;'m sure you could email or just call him and talk to him about your dad. Its hard to talk when they are around, saves the arguing lol. Hopefully he can make things a little easier on your and your mom.

Oh good point. I didn't think of that. True. It's better to have clear pictures and answers - even if it means waiting. I could maybe email the Dr. about dad.... since he's always with it's hard to mention anything. That is simply brilliant. I would love some product like that for him....

I really hope the appointment for your mother goes well. I would be nervous too. Worrying about the weather on top of it stinks! Are you a caretaker for your parents or are you just helping them when you can?

Keeping my fingers crossed that all is well for your mom's appointment! My dad is going through various doctor's appointments and tests - I feel for you about the nerve wracking end of things. Yes, doctors know the technical sides and deal with patients basically only when they are in the office - they may hear about things but don't know the entire dynamics of what happens once they leave the office. I do like the idea of a nice meal for afterwards - always good to have something to look forward to!

Thank you so much dear. We didn't go , based on poor weather. I hope your dad is alright … it is so hard to go through this with an aging parent. Also true - I suppose no one could fully grasp - until they actually live through it Oh yes, that is actually something dad taught me. If something is tough, stressfull, etc - do something nice for yourself like go out to eat.

I admire you so much my Faye. You are such a good lady to your parents both. I can relate to the stress you are under with your Dad particularly with the moods to say the least. And worrying for your dear Mother. I am so glad that you can share with us here. Yes in God we must have faith, as He is the only. I am here dear friend for you too xoxox You are always in my prayers and of course your parents too.

I am taking my sister for an appointment tomorrow, but our weather is comparatively decent. I do not envy you. You are taking dad along, correct? I can deal with my sister by herself and she is not ungrateful, just at times exhausting. We got the other car fixed so now I can comfortably leave Bob at home and if I am late he still can go bowling Woo hoo!

Thanks dear. I feel for my mom. Going through this stuff with my dad *and* health issues her own. Unfortunately I have my wonderings if he will get much better, or if he is in early dementia. :/ But fortunately enough he was in a good enough mood while I was there, and hope he will continue- I have some hopes that he will be able to have some medication that will help
