February 9th, Saturday, is National Bagel Day so if you're a bagel lover like me, take advantage of the special deals available today, or head out to your favorite bakery and enjoy one. Some eateries offering deals are Panera Bread, Manhattan Bagel, Einstein Bros.,and Bagels and Brew. And I'm sure there are others in your area just go online and check it out!
According to the National Day Calendar, which celebrates this occasion each year, bagels originated in 1610, in Krakow, Poland. Bagels are one of the few breads that are boiled then baked. This creates a soft inside while keeping a crisp outside. This tasty bread sells over a billion dollars worth each year in the United States.
Here are a few more bagel fun facts to enjoy:
- By 1950, bagels replaced donuts as an essential breakfast item.
- There are countless varieties to satisfy all your tastes; sweet, salty, or spicy.
- Bagels are versatile. For example, I like to make pizza bagels, delicious.
- They are convenient. You can find bagels at grocery stores, coffee shops, and even gas stations.
Cream cheese is a favorite topping on bagels. I like to dab a bit of jelly on top of my cream cheese to satisfy my sweet tooth. How about you? If your a bagel lover how do you prepare yours? If you like another breakfast type bread instead of the bagel, what would be your preference?

Well, I'm sure your have a similar kind of bread you enjoy. Interesting, many places sell them in the U.S. even fast food places like Mc Donald's. I have read that a bread roll or toast called (torrada) is popular for breakfast.

@dgobucks226 May be some McDonald's have them, may be in the big city, our local one has no bagels at all. It opens at 11 am, they do not even serve breakfast. I think that soon they will go broke as the one in Rome. The local McD only serves the classic bun with the meat patty inside or the chicken nuggets, I never tried, there are two nice inexpensive restaurants inside the Mall that is at a walking distance.

@LadyDuck I'm not a fan of Mc Donald's. I prefer a local bakery for bagels.

I did notice that Switzerland and Italy both have Mc Donald's franchises where a bagel might be purchased. However, nothing would beat one made in the home with special care

My very favorite bagel is Panera's Cinnamon Crunch, that is also their most fattening..duh..figures, I also will usually add both cream cheese and jelly..unless it is a very sweet bagel like the one I was talking about.

Very neat! Cinnamon Crunch sounds like a really interesting kind to try. Sometimes we just have to splurge and enjoy those extra calories, lol.

@dgobucks226 I am not sure if this is the same everywhere, but Panera here, has half priced bagels on Tuesday. You can get a Bakers Dozen for about 6 bucks. They last forever!

@snowy22315 That's great. Like you I look for a good deal. I sometimes buy them at Shoprite when they have a Manager's special. I freeze them and enjoy them when the mood hits me!

I love bagels too, it is not easy to find a good New York style bagel but I do like the crunchy cinnamon at Panera and at home in Connecticut we get our bagels at Stew Leonards.

Toast instead of bagels? Some bacon, eggs, sausages, would sure go nice with a bagel. Aussies would love the addition, lol.

I grew up with bagels. Jews like to eat them. People like them with cream cheese and lox which is a fish. I like them with cream cheese on them and also butter and cheese. Right now no bagels for us Jews. Starting Friday night we will be eating matza which is unleavened bread for 7 days and then back to bread again. People rush out after the holiday is over to get bread.

Very interesting response! Yes, I can understand it would be hard to go without bread for to long. I like cream cheese on my bagels and sometimes I add a dab of jelly.

I have them with just jelly too. When I can afford the extra calories I'll put both cream cheese and jelly on them. Great combo Never tried blueberry but I imagine they are good!
