It is around May that mangoes get ready for harvesting But this year it is different We have already plucked a few and more are up there. Birds are having fun time pecking at them which is also an indication that we should get going with our job.
We have four different varieties and the best are the Benet Alphonso. They are sweet and fleshy.

@allknowing Mangoes are grown in the sub-tropical and tropical areas of New South Wales, the Northern Territory, West Australia and Queensland.

What you get in the market are artificially ripened and should not be consumed.

We did not realise until we saw a half eaten mango on the ground (lol) As you know we do not wait for the mangoes to turn colour but depend on birds to tell us when we should harvest them

@allknowing Birds know better than us when they are ready to eat. Little thieves.

I recall a conversation while I was in Indonesia about the tastiest mangoes.
I told about my favorite varieties from India.
My Pakistani friend said nothing to beat those from his country.
Then my Sri Lankan friend was adamant the Jaffna mangoes were the best.
In fact, I love a couple of Indonesian varieties too - siva

Being the king of fruits matters little where they come from (lol) Having said that one does have choices. I like the alphonso although the mundappa is no less.

@allknowing We are spoilt for choices in terms of varieties available.
There is a craving for our favorites; no wonder even diabetics think the sweetest of mangoes can do no harm! siva

Benet Alphonso, Quite a name for a person... Ha ha... Our harvest days for mangoes are from December to January. Sadly, mangoes here are infected by many pests that seem even pesticide cannot kill... So, our production is not great anymore.

We are spared from pests but birds have a great day which we do not mind.

@allknowing Yes, those are the ones I like to buy. Do you eat them right off the trees?

I don't actually like mangoes to eat, but, think it's good blended with orange or pineapple as a juice

I love summer only for mangoes. My family on both sides have a lot of orchards of mangoes and litchi. And that makes some good source of income for us. We always pray for a good produce.

@KlyliePot I like both. I use raw ones for cooking. My favorite is Alphonse in South India and Langda from North India for the ripe yellow ones.

@allknowing I hate the thought of that. If I was a bird I'd fly across the ocean and have a feed.

Back in the former Canal Zone in Panama, there were plenty of mangoes near my former home in La Boca Panama since there was a huge tree in the backyard of the home.

Your own mangoes is more than just eating them There is joy in the entire process of seeing the tree in flower and final readiness for their harvesting
